Never try and tell this to someone though, because they tend to get incredibly shirty, especially if their computer does end up with a virus. Telling them it's their fault for being so stupid in the first place also does not help.

Common sense, eh? The average computer novice usually cannot distinguish between an official OS dialogue box and a fake one produced by "malware". Put yourself in the position of a new computer user. What would you do if a box on your computer said "Your computer may be at risk - press 'Yes' for immediate protection"?
