Far better to disuss the engagement first and take her down the jewellers. It's not just the size, it's the style. Choosing one without her being there is like trying to buy clothes for a woman - completely impossible. You can then surprise her by choosing when/where to propose, and at least you know she'll say yes and she'll be happy with the ring. A mature and intelligent woman won't care that she already knew the proposal was impending.

By the way, if you save your Tesco Clubcard vouchers you can convert them to 4 times their value at Goldsmiths.

And very probably true.

But any hypothetically asking by me wouldn't be to a her but to a him...
