I'd just come back from the local Ritzy, dancing to Sunshine After the Rain, Only Love Can Set you Free and all that malarky.

Sat down in the front room and played with our new Sky Analogue Amstrad system and came across the reports that Diana had hurt her leg in a crash.

Then I saw Martin Stanford tell everyone she's died, watched for a couple of hours, woke up Mum and Dad to tell them, then went to bed. Funny thing is I had to hold back the tears when I was telling them. They should have worked out I was gay at that point ;)

Next day drove around feeling rather strange with Radio 1 playing rather strange music. Weird day indeed!!

I briefly dated a guy from New York (of Brazilian origin). He was a staff writer of the Ellen Degeneres show (before she came out as a lesbian and ABC cancelled the show).

He had flown over that weekend to see me and I took him to a party.

We walked home in the early hours of the morning (it was a Sunday, wasn't it?) and got back to his hotel. I asked the staff if they would open the bar for us at which point we were asked, "Did you hear about Diana and Dodi? They're deed!".

She mentioned being chased by press into a tunnel, but all I could imagine was Diana on a speedboat (as had been photographed a lot that week). I was confused (and a bit fucked) and insisted they put the TV in the bar on.

I think I went into some kind of shock. I remember Louis (my partner) trying to get me into bed in his room but I got very upset at his lack of consideration in the circumstances.

He flew home a few days later and despite meeting in Florida a month or so later it was the death of our relationship.

It was an extraordinary time. I haven't known anything before or since that made me feel like I did that week.

Awful.

I miss her still - and I honestly couldn't give a fuck about those who say I was "made to feel that way by the press".

I put on CEEFAX in the morning and most of the regular features had been suspended. What a bunch of cunts, I thought. And still do.

She wouldn't have lasted this long even without the crash, imagine how ferocious the media attention would be these days.

I remember waking up that Sunday morning.

I'd not long had a little portable telly in my bedroom, and most mornings I would switch it on. For some reason, that day I didn't and decided instead to get up and make a coffee. This was at 8.06am - I distinctly remember looking up at the kitchen clock.

Then my mother comes into the kitchen, still in her nightie, and says "Diana and Dodi died last night in a car crash". Confused by her ramblings I said "what?". Then she SCREAMED at me: "PRINCESS DIANA IS DEAD! GONE! KAPUT!". A cold shiver went down my spine. I snapped back something like "Why are you shouting? You stupid old bat". And then stormed out of the room. I went back into my room, flicked on the telly to be greeted with Diana coverage on every channel.

Two days later on 2nd Sept, I remember my history teacher saying to the class on the first day of the new term: "My goodness you're a miserable lot today. Are you still crying over that bitch Diana?". The class laughed loudly. Except me. I was disgusted by her lack of compassion.

I was on holiday in Gran Canaria when she died - my brother was in the apartment next door and shouted over the balcony to switch CNN on. It was really weird, at first I didn't realise just how huge a story it'd be and thought "oh, that's a shame".

What was even weirder was that, being abroad, all the papers were the first editions and mentioned nothing of it - I'd imagine the first editions never saw the light of day in the UK. I couldn't believe just how much there was about Diana in them - pictures of her on holiday with Dodi a few days earlier, and one article in particular I remember about how William and Harry were unhappy about Charles' relationship with Camilla. I think that's when I realised how significant the day was and what a prominent figure she had become.
