Just out of interest which company's cashpoint is this? Outside Warringtom Morrisons we have HSBC, Lloyds TSB and Abbey.

But again rare to see a machine dispense £5 notes. The one that annoys me the most is Sainsbury's Bank's ATM, it takes ages and you have to type in how much you want rather than the on screen options.

It's an HSBC machine. There's a kind-of mini branch just inside the store.

Well I went to my Safeway with mum today, and she couldn't find ANYTHING she wanted. And what she could find was of a poor quality or not what she wanted. The store has tons of empty spaces, stuff randomly missing and boxes all over the place.

It is also chock full of tacky-looking promotions hanging from the ceiling. In addition, there are HUMONGOUS "Enjoy the change" ads left right and centre and over every checkout.

It's become a really good-quality store into a mish-mash of, well, I don't know what! They're even selling suitcases, stationery and duvets... IN THE ENTERTAINMENT SECTION!

Another case of "Morrisons killed my local Safeway" methinks. My mother says she's never shopping there again - she shopped there since 1992, but it would seem never again.

The local Somerfield continues to have upturns in takings and custom...

[quote="Brad"]But Barclays in York you can get a fiver from, one of the older style machines anyhow.[quote]

No you can't anymore as the machines have been removed!

I had a morrisons readymade bangers and mash at work today. Cooked it in the microwave and it was surprisingly nice.

Yes, seems to be a similar story all over the place. It is the Morrisons way of doing things, but Safeway's customers are traditionally different - hence it won't work... Particularly a problem in a place where there's just one supermarket when what you'd got used to changes - and there's no alternative.

But hey Morrisons have done well doing what they're doing here - who knows, in the long run it may well work.

A few snippets from an article published yesterday at BBC News Online regarding the whole Safeway/Morrisons changeover . . .
Store rebranding boosts Morrisons

Shares in supermarket group Morrisons have jumped 15% after investors cheered
new sales figures for former Safeway stores now rebranded under its own name.

Morrisons, which took over Safeway in March, said recent trading had
shown sales at the revamped stores were up 13% on a year ago.
The Safeway brand name should now completely disappear by the end of 2005.
Retail analyst Robert Clark said one problem facing Morrisons was that traditional Safeway
customers were not impressed with Morrisons more "brutal and simplistic" products.
"Safeway has always been slightly upmarket and has different customers than Morrisons.
"This is the big challenge for Morrisons - how to please two different sets of shoppers."

Simple, bring back Safeway.

why are they getting rid of an established and popular brand name anyway?

Very true, the problem is that Morrisons and Safeway aren't the same, by getting rid of Safeway and replacing it with Morrisons you are getting rid of a supermarket culture and replacing it with something new and as the report says 'brutal', which is very true. Safeway has a reputation for being one of the big supermarkets that are aimed for people more of a higher class, where as Morrisons attracts to the lowest common denominator. Morrisons is good at running their own stores, people know what they are getting. I don't see any reason why they want to kill off Safeway, granted the company wishes to expand into Southern England and further into Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, but they're getting rid of a great brand name is just suicide for Morrisons. It is very downmarket compared to Safeway.

I don't see any reason why Safeway has to go, I think the furthest it should be 'Morrisonsized' is all of this 'Enjoy The Change' crap, and posters they have at the minute that looks like it says 'More Reasons to Shop at Safeway', but it does say Morrisons, but also says 'Also Available at..'

I think Morrisons have brought in some of old Safeways own stuff, as they now have some more upmarket brands for the sandwiches and ready meals.

And for anyone who wants to know all Morrisons and Safeway stores in England and Wales will be closed on the 25th, 26th, 27th of December and 1st January. And apparently we are the only supermarket to give staff 3 days off!

I bet you're alll pleased to know ( ) that from tomorrow Morrisons will be starting their Christmas promotions, I know this as I saw loads of Christmas signs and promos ready to go up this afternoon, plus a stand had the Christmas promos on it again.

Though compared to the rest of the year Morrisons isn't that tacky at Christmas, a very nice red with snowflakes, same design they've been using for a couple of years now.
