hello ladies and gentleman. what with me being new to all this smartphone business, anybody recommend an android app or service which lets me upload/download files from my phone and i can login and get them from my desktop.

i know about dropbox, but that requires you to install a meaty client on your PC doesn't it? i just want something web based that will work at work and it would be good if the app on the phone doesn't try to spend all day syncing so the files which are in the 'cloud' are on my phone, i don't really need that, i'll download them if i need them.

any suggestions great appreciated.

I don't believe you need to install DropBox desktop, I think you can access them in a web browser. I think I have in the past.

I'm not sure why I quoted this post rather than just replying, either.

You can do it locally with a pogoplug connected to a USB hard drive. As a teeny server it also features a web-based service for accessing your stuff from afar. Only downside: it's limited to the speed of your broadband upload. It's the gizmo solution.

I've been using Dropbox for the last month or so and it doesn't seem particularly 'meaty' or resource heavy. I use it on a Netbook that struggles at times and it's had no affect on it's performance. The nice thing about the application is that it acts just like a normal windows folder, the 'public' folder is quite handy for sending files to friends too.

Having said that it can be used on the web too, it's fairly simple to use except I don't think you can drag and drop. I'm pretty sure you can sign up and use it without downloading the software - even if you have to download it to make it think you have!

The Android app is pretty small and unobtrusive (and can be moved to the SD card) and it integrates with the 'share' menu so really easy to use. It does work how you suggest, you see the file names and you then download just what you want to the phone. The only slight issue I've had is that manipulation of files on the phone isn't great and it doesn't give you any way to move a file into a particular place on the card - you need to move it using File Manager or similar
