Samsung media player being a shit

I had a feeling this forum was running short of technical queries... ;)

I have a Samsung TV with a built in USB reader media player thing which usually works very well. However, I've put some widescreen videos on there and they've become squashed into a 4:3 aspect ratio, despite being exported, and is playing in 16:9 on my computer. Annoyingly, when in the USB thing mode, there are only two options - 'original' which pretty much shrinks the video to its normal size, or 'fit' which is what it's usually set to, and results in the squashed 4:3 format.

I already have widescreen videos playing on there and are in 16:9, so I assumed the file format may be something to do with it. I've tried various file type conversions, all of which do not export in the video's proper aspect ratio - despite selecting 16:9, it either comes out in 4:3 squashed, or in 16:9 but with black bars at the side leaving a 4:3 squashed video in the middle.

Any assistance would be much appreciated :D

Sadly, I'm not sure how to solve your problem. However, I can add my dislike of Samsung TVs; we've got one and it's been nothing but trouble.

I disagree. Samsung tellys, in my opinion, have the best picture quality of all. Their Blu-ray player however is annoying, although I did buy a one they were selling off at Tesco so perhaps its more comparable to my old £79 DVD player from back in the day.
