Obscure purchases

I currently have a fancy gel mouse mat which is all very nice but I fancy a change. I also have a glass desk and saw this in an airport and think it is excellent.

It's very thin, stuck onto the glass surface and is made of the sort of stuff they use to cheaply frost up windows. it's so sleek and works really well with optical mice. I can't find it anywhere though.

Anyone know where I can get myself one of these?

How about you buy some of the sort of stuff they use to cheaply frost up windows and stick that to your desk?

Oh believe me I tried, Gav, but it was stuck on firm. It wouldn't have come off cleanly.

Anyway, marksi's suggestion is probably what i'll end up doing, but I really had my eye set on a nice neat oval shaped thing. One doesn't want to feel cheap you know, and I do t think I'd do a good job at cutting the ovall out neatly!

If you find a decent ironmongers or kitchenware shop, you can probably buy it by the metre, and cut a nice oval section to stick to your desk. Don't use the spray on stuff, as its not very robust and will flake off.

The mousemats are sold by a Greenwich-based company called C&C Graphics Ltd. priced £4.99.

They haven't got a website, but you can give them a call on 020 8293 4990.

Edit: The ones they sell are completely transparent, although they are oval shaped and self-adhesive. However, if you really want a frosted version then they might be able to tell you where you can get one from, if you ask.

I've never bothered with a mat since the advent of optical mice. If you haven't got a mat, you can't fall of the side when trying to go right to the edge of the screen, which always used to be my problem.

Am I right in assuming from the above that an optical mouse gets somewhat confused on a clear glass surface?

They do, yes. Judder or don't move at all in my experience.

I'm currently using the wrong side of a mousemat - its a black neoprene type thing (rather than the hideous vinyl printed front side with some company logo). Works well and is comfy on my hand.
