The sun glows a burned orange as it sinks behind a skyscraper, a car horn screeches irritably, the wind whistles through the acres of willows in Central Park: New York, the most offbeat and eccentric city in America, is my new home.
Don’t get me wrong, I have always loved London, it’s a city where being unusual is accepted-the norm, even. The music scene is so strong that you can’t walk through certain areas without being compelled to duck into some dive bar to see a band playing music unlike anything you’ve heard before. I grew up there, walked its cobbled streets a thousand times, and frequented its infamous haunts.
My best friend here is a boy named Bunny. We spend our days traipsing around Manhattan—him in skin-tight plaid trousers, huge geek glasses, and a mass of red hair sticking out haphazardly from beneath an Amish-style hat. We buy pizza from street vendors, run through Times Square marvelling at its energy, and source new vintage boutiques.
Oddly, despite deleting 1000 nasty comments, the magazine promptly received another 1000 in their place.
This is my particular favourite...
Peaches, I have just spent the morning in Central London and I failed to encounter any cobbled streets. Not even a solitary square yard of 'cobbledness' could I find. I briefly contemplated purchasing a slice of pizza from a street vendor - I thought this might temper my disappointment at finding only smooth pavements. Then I realised I am simply not brave or 'edgy' enough to approach such a vendor and buy street food. I wondered briefly if you might post some map co-ordinates for the main cobbled areas in London. I wish to go there and skip and play among the cobbles a thousand times. I feel this would bring something new to my life. How is the energy in Times Square today? No doubt Bunny and you are marvelling at it once more? Your spirit of adventure is incredible. Your travels must have opened your eyes to this world. Those palm trees, truck stops, fast food outlets - I can only dream of such wondrous things. You seem to be a subtle blend of Captain Scott, Christopher Colombus, Michael Palin and Bill Bryson. A real patchwork quilt of a lass...
