Hi there, was wondering if anyone could help me out with a little problem I am having. I try to open a word document from my documents but nothing happens - I go to open with but I cannot find MS Word anywhere on my program files in the list it gives. But I have the program on my computer. Can anyone please help me?

Have you tried opening Word, and then using the Open dialogue in the File menu? i.e. doing it t'other way round?

Ye that works fine...but I would prefer to do it the way I am used too. Anyone any ideas?

Have you checked the file type associations? Which OS are you on?

Two solutions: You could either do a repair for the Office install, should get your file associations back or alternatively shift-right click on the file, use Open With.. and associate the file extension to open with Word by hand.

No idea if this is related, but I've noticed on my Vista laptop, if it's been on for several days randomly it'll lose its Office file associations, and Office itself behaves rather odd. A reboot sorts it out. No idea if it's actually related to uptime, or just a case of 'on a long enough timeline, the survival rate for everyone drops to zero'.

I'd blame this one on uptime issues, only non-server based version of Windows that could maintain days or weeks of uptime without somehow screwing itself up was Windows 2000. No film quotes to be had here.

Related? Who can say, nobody's bothering to actually mention what version of Office they're running.

:squints exasperatedly: OK... just uninstall and reinstall, it'll sort it out with little fiddling about. Very unnecessary but it's as quick a fix I can be giving.
