I'd Rather Go To Prison

Reading my local paper tonight, The News (I believe Bail knows it) has really got me angry tonight.

They had this double page spread about some stupid women who last year decided she didn't want to pay her council tax. She reckoned the police hadn't done enough about a robbery at her house, and therefore she was allowed to drop out of paying her council tax like everybody else.

Consequently, the magistrate sent her to prison. She kept a diary, throughout which she moaned about how rubbish it was. She also had the cheek to say something along the lines of, 'all prisoners should be made to work for their keep instead of taxpayers having to foot the bill'. Er, excuse me, who are you to start complaining about council tax? You don't even pay them.

So, I was reading it, and I suddenly wondered how long she was in there for...

6 months? Ridiculous, that's far too short. No, wait, it isn't. 3 months? 2? No, actually she was put in there for 28 days. Less than her month. Then when she gets out she still hasn't paid here tax.

Don't forget , this woman gets numerous benefits and a war pension.

So, what has she learnt from this? Pay this year's bill straight away?

No, she's already sent it back. She says she will never pay council tax again 'until they offer something for the money they take off us'. What a pratt.

The 28 days won't have been offered as an alternative to her tax bill, so she'll face another 28 days, and another until she coughs up.

Not sure if that scenario is possible in Scotland as you can't end up in prison because of debt, I'm told.

They should oblige and stop collecting her bins!

I don't imagine her experience in prison was very pleasant. I certainly wouldn't like to spent time inside.

I'm glad I wasn't the only one who saw that and thought "whaaaa?"
