I have been added to the mailing list of a staight adult sex shop. They use a script called mailman and like idiots have left the reply to all feature on (sort of like yahoo groups)

I would have just deleted it but started getting the following emails:

ive never heard of it in my life, kinda weird why i got these e-mails!
To me it looks like thay have bought a list to start spamming people and messed up - I complined and have been in converstation with the so called MD
We send out an opt-in mailing list to our customers only who have bought from us over the past 7 years and have not ticked the box that says " i do not want to receive your newsletter"

Some joker has sent an email to [email protected] saying " please remove my email" and this has sent an email to everyone who is on the list.

We do not know how this has happened, but our hosts are looking into this for us.

If you are on our mailing list Dave and you wish to be removed

Simply Click this link below and send
[email protected]?subject=leave

We apologise for any inconvenience caused.

Thank you
Director
Gaynors Goodies.
I have never bought anything from them (get my sex toys from a reputiable source )
But I have not signed up and it looks like lots of others have not signed up to your lists – THAT is my point. I can understand mistakes where everyone gets a reply in error – It happens my Issue is you have not had me as a customer, nor does it look like others have “opted in” to yours lists. It is this that I object to.

The technical problems are not the issue here – It is the fact my address (and others) looks like it has been imported from a list somewhere!

Dave
Just keep getting excuses:
We only send out emails on our newsletter and people have to subscribe to this, by ordering from us online, catalogue orders etc.
A lot of people forget as the list is quite old.
We are seroiusly looking into this Dave.

Thank you.
Gaynors Goodies.
I replied:
I know I am being a pain but I have NOT bought anything from you. – I was sent a signup conformation email with a password:

This is the email. Check your records I am not a customer.
and got:
We can only apologise if this is the case, someone may have used your email address, a spammer or someone.
Which is false:

My reply:
I want to make another point. The list is a double opt in (I use mailman for my own servers) this means you enter your email address and are then sent a conformation email to COMFIRM you want to signup – you click on this link and you are asked again if you want to continue. The only way to avoid this is to directly import addresses into the admin. I have not had any conformation emails and it CANT have been someone else as the conformation email goes to the address of the person signing up.

You need to look into where this data has come from as its not just me – As you are a UK based company there are spamming Laws
Should I take this further - I have already complined to his host. I get enough spam and if some idiot is going to buy a list he should at least know how to use it!

It's also illegal to send spam to an EU citizen. Even if the spammers are based outside of the EU, they can still be punished.

I've reported umpteen companies that spam, but I've not heard anything back from the authorities.

I am having a but of fun with the guy as he seems to think I am thick! (Spelling not withstanding)

Its worth it jsut to take up his time in replying to my emails I think there is only one or two people at the company.

can you not block the gaynors-goodies.co.uk domain in your email client so you never get the messages?

i keep getting an order confirmations from lulu.com - i emailed the website but they still keep coming, so i blocked it.

in outlook you right click the message and select the junk mail option, from memory.

I have removed myself from the list and added the domain to the spam list. Its the principal of the thing, I get more than enough junk and this is an avenue to vent some fustrations. If they were stupid enough to use the list in an obvous way its thier own fault!

I'd just block them and forget about it.

That probably sounds hypocritical as Dave and anyone else who knows me will think that's the last thing I would do as I'm rather like a dog with a bone when someone annoys me... but I'm trying not to let minor things (such as spam) irritate me these days. Just let it go!!!

Here's a tip though - if you get junk mail in the future, 99.9% of times if they offer to "click here to remove your message" it's a scam to harvest more email addresses.

Don't muck about Dave, threaten to sue them if you receive one more item of mail.

I do it all the time (at work) and you would be amazed how quickly you receive results.

Yep!

Most spammers sent out millions of e-mails to random addresses. 99% of the e-mails they send out will bounce back to them, so if you click on "remove" me, the spammer knows that that e-mail address is active and will put you on a kind of golden list, and sell your e-mail address (along with thousands of others like you) to other spammers and so the vicious circle get's bigger.

I'm quite perplexed by the amount of spam e-mails I get in Gmail, which are listed as:

(sender unknown) (subject unknown)

And there's nothing at all in the message. I'm assuming it's sent out by a bot to check if that address is being used. If it doesn't bounce back to the spammer, then it means that the address is being used. Damn.

Thats correct - if it is not bouncing its classed as a live address.

Not heard anything since I sent them the UK Spamming law

BTInternet have a similar set up where you can use "disposable" addresses like that.
