Google Trends (Google Trends is a wondeful service provided by google which aggegates search data and puts it on a time graph (a bunch of examples are available on the main page). It's great fun if you're bored and you can get some very intersting statistics out of it!

For example..

DID YOU KNOW THAT:

> Dehli, India, searches most for pornography in the world

> And within the UK, there's some filthy city called "Winnersh" who ranks number 1

> Within the UK, Edinburgh is the most suicidal city.

> Worldwide, 8 out of the top 10 country cities listed are from the USA when referring to Suicide

> In the UK, somewhere called St Andrews is by far and away the most paranoid about Terrorism

> Edinburgh ranks top for searches for BBC News Music

> Oxford and Cambridge seem to catch the most colds!

> The people in St Albans clearly can't stand England because they're always looking for holidays! The graph shows that people also tend to disappear for the Summer and the New Year, ironically the two times when it's nicest in Britain.

> You might wnat to avoid Winchester - it's full of "chavs" according to Google Trends results!

> People from Croydon have no idea how to dance...

> which makes sense as they're most eager to kill people! (Incidentally, it sems people get more intersted in murder just after the new year.... obviously all the put-on bonhomie, with people one wouldn't normally bother pick their nose to save, is too much for most, as they turn to the gun to relieve their stress!

Hope you have as much fun as I did with Google Trends... you can also put more than one "query" on the graph to see if there's a neat correlation! :-)

Load of shite.

When I did searches on there a week or so ago, it came up with Milton Keynes as being in the top five searching areas for almost every single word I put in.

I simply cannot believe that Milton Keynes is such a hub of activity that it merits a place in just about every result related to the UK.

Also, try ''ABC''.

Can it really be true that the city of Adelaide (pop. 1.1 million) does more searches for that than the city of New York (pop. 18 million)?

I haven't read properly how it works, so it may be doing it on a percentage basis rather than actual number of searches, but it seems skewed in a lot of results.

ABC is Oz's BBC effectively.

Yes, i know that you cunt.

The point I am making is that isn't it a tad strange that a city with 1.1 million people would search for ABC more than a city of 18 million people?

That is, indeed, if Google Trends searches for pure numbers of searches, rather than percentages or ratios.

Google has gone downhill...

You always get search results showing search results from other search sites who in turn are showing search results from other search sites!!!!

or you get things like find the cheapest peter smiths at ebay :)

I remember a day when Google was smaller and simpler. ahhh memories...

Winnersh is no city - just a small sort of suburb in between Reading and Wokingham!

google has also changed their system recently and stuff doesn't seem to be updating.

It's really getting rather poor. There's just too much spam in the world.

I can't see however, why google can't have a "report this result" button next to results so the ones that are searches on other search engines and crap like that can be removed from the results.

Interesting that Poplar seems to come up in many searches, as well as London. So would that be London excuding Poplar then?

Maybe it's because Google encourage their staff to play. I read in a newspaper article sometime ago that Google towers is a play school for adults.

They are obviously using the data from the IP addresses, since NTL has a datacentre in Winnersh.
