I want a job

I've had enough of Uni! It's uninpsiring, boring, depressing and the weather is shite.

I saw two of my friends from school this week, who I hadn't seen for at least 4 years. They both had jobs and both drove brand new cars.

And here's me, living in a horrible shitty town, in a shitty house, with no money, no proper job and incredibly disillusioned with everything.

I've always wanted to work in the media, and perhaps one day be on screen. I really really don't think that's going to happen now. I just want money.

I really don't mind what I do now, as long as it's a decent wage (£16,000+) and preferably in south Wales or along the M4 corridor in England.

The Job Centre Plus website is currently down, yet again - it's complete shit that website, and so are Natwest.

I have a cheque for £500 to cash, and I really needed it cashed today so it would go through by early next week. Saturday morning at 11.55am, I get to the bank and...IT'S CLOSED! I was not happy. Natwest are a load of money grabbing fuckers who treat their customers like shit.

Anyway, I guess you can tell I'm reaching or reached the end of my tether, so any constructive advice on what to do with my life, is greatly appriecated.

Don't say 'stay at uni', because it's going to make hardly any difference to me whether I have a degree in shitty media or not. I just detest the fact of 2 more years living off a patheticly small student loan, living with french people in this hell hole and having no money whatsoever to buy the things I want.

Get in touch with the companies directly. HMV, GAP wherever you want to work, will most likely have dedicated sections on their website, which will allow you to find available jobs in your region.

I was looking for work over christmas, but I started too late to be considered for most. But I dont have the fun lively nature to be considered for a job working with the public, I imagine you'd have no problems with that.

Of course, you'll want to be sure this isnt just winter moneyless blues. You could always take a Gap year from Uni to work.

You are not going to earn £16,000 from Gap or HMV unless you are managing a store or have half a dozen years of service. Even then you are pushing it. Depending of course on where you are in the UK you could be looking at as little as £12k for administration or clerical work in large corporate offices.

James, how much longer does your course run? Play the big game here. Think you are bored now? How will you feel after 5 years being a wage slave with no prospects?

I think you'd be better completing Uni. If nothing else you wont have to explain why your course is unfinished at job interviews. "Boredom" seldom passes as a good excuse for not finishing what you start.

Hang in there mate.

I guess if you leave a course, potential employers will ask why. If you hang on in there then at least people will see that you stayed the course. I left my PGCE because I was crap at it basically! I don't tell employers that directly, I just say that I deferred and that 'teaching isn't for everyone'. Oh well, just my pennysworth!

I'd say that's mighty fine advice. Currently in uni, I realise what a great chance it is. I'm working hard and will have a degree at the end of it. I'm not working 9 to 5 Monday-Friday and I'm doing a subject I enjoy.

If anything be grateful of university because I know already I'm going to miss it when I finally have to leave.

Finally, don't feel restricted in staying within the boundaries. I may be in the first year of my course, but I'm out there freelancing on stations that want to pay me peanuts. Not great but many employers have said that it's a shame I'm at uni as they'd probably take me on in positions they need to fill. Just goes to show. Get out there and schmoose and make those contacts do good for you. They can. Honest.

To be honest with you, I can kinda sympathise. At the moment coming up to my GCSE final exams, I have absoloutly no motivation.

I know what subjects I want to do well in, but as far as I can see, alot of subjects I just cant be arsed with. Like science, and maths. I keep questioning myself, "What am I getting out of this?". You ask the same question to a teacher and they just say "A D Grade". What kinda motivation is that?! Great, so what can I do with my D in science?

In the past year I've just felt exasperated and apethetic. But alas, there is something there pushing me along, to tell me to keep going, to drag myself along, because it may be worth it in the end.

Personally, I think you should follow maybe a same track of thought. If you keep pushing yourself to the end, you'll get what you want. Unfortunatly, it'll take you fucking ages.

I know that somethings are a bit crap for you just now Jamez but don't do anything silly you will regret in years to come .
I would carry on with uni if i were you .Life is drab dull and boring for you at the moment and your pissed off mate.

However just because your going to get a job and hopefully earn some decent money it's NOT the answer to everything and you being you will get bored and fed up of your average job very quickly.

I admire the following things about you (apart from your good looks ). Your focused and know what you want out of life which is great your also hungry for success.

Jamez your only a young guy after you finish uni take a year out and go explore the world get off down under there's plenty of birds down there for you .Your mates maybe driving new cars now and your green with envy but in a few years they will be in the same place and be bogged down with crap !!!.You'll have completed uni have a degree hopefully travelled and experienced life and be in a position to achieve your ambitions .Don't get to an age and regret a silly choice you have made because you have no money and don't have a new car hell thats life and part of uni .

Stop your winging and finish that course i want to see you reading the BBC news someday they need some horny dudes on there come on mate !!!!! ;)

My personal opinion is that uni is a complete and utter waste of time. I finished Uni in 2000 and couldn't get a job I wanted. Since then, I "fucked up" (or at least I thought I did) for 4 years, doing shitty jobs I didn't want to do. However, these shitty jobs led into the job I'm in now which I enjoy and has NOTHING to do with my degree. I never got the job because of my degree either, it was the previous experience I gained in the shitty jobs that has got me to where I'm at now, plus of course making yourself presentable in interviews.

Do you want to do another 2 years at uni and STILL find yourself at the bottom of the ladder? Why waste time. Many employers question how valuable a uni degree actually is in this day and age.

The difference is GCSE is compulsory, while Uni costs money and is voluntary.

You can work in the likes of Gap or HMV and own a brand new car it depends how you manage your money.

I can sympathise with you. I cannot be bothered with Uni after I leave college so I don't know what I'm going to do I suppose I'll have to see what happens.

From personal experience I've had I could say I've had 2 major career opertunities not relating to what I'm studying.

Okay the first is McDonalds, having worked there since 16 I know how the business works, the banter is good and lots of nice people to work with. The pay further up the ladder is good and who knows I could make Company Director etc and have a big fat cat salary. Free car and various other bits and bobs. I don't mind working at McD's. It's a job, it's okay and I could live it quite happily. Sadly however I had a bit of a time at the end of 2003 and ruined my chances, since then my chance has returned but I don't think I'll be taking it. Let's just say I didn't have closure in 2003, but I feel I now have closure with this job.

The second was with Scotrail. I didn't get the job I applied for because I didn't try hard enough but I like to work with people and being a conductor or whatever and working my way up sounds good. Had I got that job who knows where I'd be today or in a few years to come.

I'm happy fittering around at college and work. The future is far away, I'm out to have some fun so go with it.

Try getting into a job you think you might like - for me I didn't like McD's. Started off just a part time job and then suddenly there's a whole world of promotions out there.

Edit: Luckily for us Scottish Students we don't have to pay to be educated we only have to pay for our loans... which I quite gladly receive and spend like a dog on heat rofl

The reason I'm so pissed off is because:

1. My landlord has cashed the rent cheque before I anticipated

2. My debit card dosen't work as I've maxed out the overdraft (£1400)

3. I've got cheques to cash for £500, but I can't do it until Monday, and even then I'm probably gonna have to wait until the end of next week before it all goes through

4. I tried to borrow £50 from my student union (you write them a cheque, and they cash it at the end of the month) and they give you £50 cash. But they said they've got no more money left until March 1st - which is helpful(!)

5. The Job Centre Plus website dosen't work for some reason (and I'm using it with IE, because I know it doesn't work in Firefox!) and I need to find a proper part time job - not sporadic voice-over work which is hardly fab money either

6. I have 56p on me right now, and that's all I have! I've run out of food and I'm waiting for NTL to cut me off any day now.

7. Even if I managed to persuade my mum to put £100 into my bank account, she wouldn't be able to do so until Monday either.

8. All my housemates and mates who live nearby have fucked off until the middle of next week, so I'm here alone, hungry and cold.

9. There's a peice of rope in my car. How do I make a noose?
