Earlier this evening I received the following message over MSN. Apparently it's quite a popular "ribbon" doing the rounds at the moment.

SWEAR TO GOD I BETTER NOT CATCH ANYONE BREAKING THIS RIBBON. This is a ribbon 4 the peoples families who have died in the sunami in indonisia . pass it on to everyone and pray. something good will happen to u tonight at 11:11 pm. this is not a joke someone will either call u or write to u online say i love u do not break this chain send to 13 people in the next 15 min dont send back

I really cannot express how revolting I find this. What a completely despicable and belligerent way of bullying people into showing compassion for those caught up in the Tsunami disaster.

What's more, if this is not toe-curling enough, the only person who apparently benefits is the gullible sod who passes the "ribbon" on.

Not the relatives of the 150,000 dead, those without homes, those who have lost absolutely everything, with nothing left to their name. Those who will only now survive if aid gets to them before they die of disease, or a lack of clean water and food. And what about the young children, their lives just beginning, who have lost the people who brought them into this world.

What do those who create, or pass on these "ribbons" really hope to achieve?

I'm confident the majority of sane members realise how desperate the situation for millions now, and do not need highlighting the severity of the situation.

I'm equally confident that they realise donating to the DEC, or taking part in the many activities up and down the country, is a much more effective way of assisting those in south-east Asia, rather than forwarding superstitious drivel, falsely believing "something good will happen to you at 11:11pm".

I've experienced the message myself. When people paste it to me I usually have a rant at them at how gullible they are. Can't stand any of those sort of messages. They usually always crop up, I seem to remember one after 9/11.

I usually get a message saying pass this on and you will find true love before the week is out.

I'm waiting for a message which will tell me next Saturdays lottery numbers!

28, 32, 11, 22, 16, and 88512758128847481. Good luck!

Speaking of which, I wonder how much it would cost to simply register all the lotto combinations - or at least enough to give you a 50% chance of winning. Perhaps if you did it when there was a high rollover you could come out in profit!

Cough you didnt get that from me by any chance :P Amusingly it's the first one I've ever forwarded, simply because I was bored and I normally give abuse to the person who sent it, and wondered whom would reply. Obviously you were less than amused Row.

Got this one from my chat logs from last week. Someone wrote:plz put a rose infront of your name 2 respect all the children and adults who have had their lives takn by the tidal wave plz copy n paste this message 2 every1 who is online msn 4 u.
There was also another 1 asking everyone to put their status to Busy last week. Obviously to annoy people because when status' are set to Busy, people don't know when their contacts have signed in or when someone sends them a message (by default)

Unfortunately Bail the one which prompted me to post this was from you. But I have to say I was more surprised that you appeared to have fallen for it, than annoyed with you.

And as I type this I've got another!
