Sounds like your software is causing the problem.
This happened at alot on my old system. It was touch and go on what .wmv files it would play. So I thought I would download the latest Windows Media Player for my old Win 98 machine. After spending an hour downloading 14mb on dialup only to find that the minimum spec was a Win 98 SE o/s, me was peeved off!
So I went for the next best thing... Windows Media Player 6.0 to 6.1 Whoooo! Trouble is, no joy, so I tried other .wmv files and they all crashed. Although it's not a problem now with my new machine, there's sommat in the encoding that makes it not too happy with older machines.
