Virgin Mobile @ WHSmith

I know this forum has a slight interest in retail goings-ons every now and then so this may be of interest.

I was in the Leeds branch of WHSmith yesterday and noticed there is now a dedicated part of the store selling Virgin Mobiles, its all decorated just like it would be in a Virgin Megastore. Is this new feature also in your local WHS?, presumably it will only be a feature of the bigger/modern branches.

That got me thinking, didn't WHS sell mobiles themselves at one time, that quietly faded away didn't it?, I've only just noticed that they don't anymore!

It's quite interesting how one of the reasons WHS went off the boil a bit was due to poor music sales caused in part by stores like Virgin Megastore and now they are selling Virgin products!

I haven't seen anyhting about this on the WHS intranet. Might just be that particular store. I'll have a look around next time I'm on the computerator

Well, a Costa Coffee place has just opened in the back of the York branch!

On the same sort of topic, what I would like to know is why Three only have their official stores in Superdrug!?! Though this is strange for WHS to have Virgin Mobile in their store, probably won't happen in many, the one in Warrington is nothing compared to the size of the one in Manchester or The Trafford Centre.

I also remember reading somewhere that a few Sainsbury's stores in the South are experimenting with Boots' pharmacy in them. I also recall Borders at The Colliseum, Cheshire Oaks, having their own Coffee shop, which became Starbucks! There's also a Subway near Trafalgar Square in London that shares with an EasyEverything Internet Cafe.

We.. sorry, WHSmith get a fair bit of bonus for each sim pack / phone on virgin they sell, same with the tiscally internet CD's I think it was something like a fiver for every tiscally user who uses the code from a WHSmith CD. I suspect its much the same with Virgin.

Our local sainsburys in altrincham has a starbuck in it, used to have an adams too, but they've got rid of that for thier own brand stuff now.

Lol cdd, some stuff is a bit ott but when offers come in like the current "Bony one get one 1/2 price on CD's" and 3 DVD for £18 its not that bad. Although the CD offer ends next week.

Working there is/was quite good, we used to get %25 but its gone down to %12.5 which is a tad annoying.

they claim it's better because you now get it off multibuys, but multibuys are old stuff, and you want the money off new stuff.

Plus you don't get a discount on chocolate.

I've had a search on Google and it turns out these Virgin Mobile concessions are being opened in Croydon, Leicester, Leeds, Tunbridge Wells, Birmingham, Coventry, York and Guildford.

Another recent development at WHS has been this whole high shelving thing, presumably so they can get more stock in less space. This seems to have happened in every store. The only store near me that is still the old style airy open plan layout with low shelves is Bradford (Broadway) and that's only because its closing down soon. This branch has also got one of them small square pictures in the stairwell with the name of the town above it in a font used years ago.
