Trying to make a DVD!!!

This is annoying! I have downloaded an AVI of Bowling For Columbine which I intend to put on a recordable DVD. Now, when I import it into Pinnacle Studio or Roxio it simply won't accept the aspect ratio of the original file and simply squashes it to 4:3 which looks like Michael Moore has been on a crash diet! There seems to be no option on either program to keep the orginal ratio, and searcing on the help command simply sends me to a glossary telling me what aspect ratio means.
Now, it also doesn't seem to want to accept the sound either. Not the first time I've had trouble with this on an AVI, though it accepts sound from an MPEG film with no problems. So... any idea how to either, alter the aspect ratio, or does anyone know of a free AVI to MPEG converter? I've searched for some but they will only either convert the first two minutes only or emblazon a huge watermark over the finished result. For the moment one with a 30 day trial or whatever is fine, as long as it does the job! Help!

I've converted files using PowerDVD from AVI (MPEGv4 encoded) to MPEGs.

My version was free on a cover disc but I believe a demo is avaliable. Look on Cyberlink's website :)

Well, I have Power DVD but it won't accept an AVI file, but I can't find a conversion option. I have tried to convert in Pinnacle itself but the picture quality is far inferior to the AVI. So, surely there must be a way of getting the sound to work on an AVI! It does it in Roxio DVD Builder too!

Really sorry about that - That was a typo and I actually meant PowerDirector

Same company and they merged names in my mind
