FTP software

I've got WS_FTP Pro installed on my computer, but for some reason, it won't let me upload files which have spaces in their filenames - everything has to be either continuous, such as "mydocuments", or with an underscore, "my_documents". This is quite annoying, as I have to manually change each file that I upload so it fits with this format. What I would like to know is if this is a problem with WS_FTP, or is it the server that I'm uploading to (BTYahoo)? If it is the former, can you recommend any good FTP software that will allow me to overcome this annoyance?!

Many thanks,
Rob

This is almost always due to the destination server's setting.

What messages do you get?

I get a message: "Error 553: xxxxx: permission denied. (Filename (accept))"

I presume that's something to do with BT's server then? Grrrr, I hate them! Not only do they do this, but they now clog up my inbox with spam, but block my innocent e-mails! This all happened when Yahoo got involved.

Try FTPing a file in internet explorer (type ftp://username:[email protected] into the address bar), and see if you can upload files with spaces. If not, it's a problem with the server.

If it does work, then it's a problem with WS_FTP. You could try Cute FTP, or if you don't mind the simplicity of IE as an FTP client then there's nothing to stop you using that.

Error 553 in regards to FTP is as follows: the filename is not allowed. It seems to be interchangable with "permission denied" as well.

I cannot find any mention of it being a WS_FTP issue from Googling, it must therefore be a BT Yahoo issue.

Have you ever been able to upload documents with spaces in them either before or after Yahoo got involved? Apparently they operate this "no spaces" policy with Geocities as well.

BT Yahoo won't let you use a space but Wanadoo will.

To be honest it's better to use filenames without spaces as certain browsers and operating systems don't like them. Links are harder to make and %20 doesn't work everywhere.

A good free FTP client for Windows is FileZilla. And before you ask, it has no relation to any Mozilla products!

(Even though it's open sourced like Mozilla, it's made completely independently of the Mozilla Foundation.)

Makes no difference, it will still not get around BT Yahoo's limit.

With regards to Wanadoo, I suppose uploading files with spaces in the names works on the mysite.wanadoo-members.co.uk service as well, it certainly works on the original Energis provided hosting sites (something.freeserve.co.uk).

Thanks for all your help - it does seem to be a BTYahoo problem. It's always been like that, even when it was BTinternet, but I've always used WS_FTP, so I didn't know which was at fault.

To be honest, I'm sick of BTYahoo in every way! Ever since Yahoo got involved, things have gone downhill. As I said earlier, I've now started receiving spam, which I never had before, and their dodgy software is clogging up my system! Their filter also allows spam through, but blocks e-mails!

Can anyone recommend a good ADSL broadband ISP? It has to be an ADSL modem at around £30.00 per month or less. BTYahoo is currently £29.99 per month for 512Kbps.

Do you have cable in your area? If so, hopefully it's ntl:home, as their mid-range broadband service currently
runs at 600Kbps, for £25 per month. This speed will be upgraded to 750Kbps sometime later this summer.

The only drawbacks that I'm aware of with ntl:home broadband, is the proxy server it uses, and the 1GB
per day download limit. Other than those issues, I personally have had no reason to complain about the
service I've recieved, aside from initial teething problems, as I signed up in the first week of service.

Eitherway, comparing BT and ntl:homes broadband services, with the latter, you're getting more for less.

And if I officially refer someone to ntl, and they sign, both myself and the new customer get referral
credit bonuses. Since I'm on the 1Mbps (upgrading to 1.5 Mbps soon) I would recieve £30 credit on
my ntl broadband. Exactly how much the new customer gets, AFAIK, that depends on whichever
broadband speed they sign up for. You'd need to get in touch with ntl:home to find out more.

I *very* highly recommend Zen ADSL (http://www.zenadsl.com) or http://www.zen.co.uk.

I was with them for 8 months, using their 512Kb service. I found their service superb, especially as you can choose to have 8 static IP addresses for the same price as 1 dynamic IP address.

I bought a router to use the service (independently) and have two pcs and a mac running beautifully, as well as wifi laptop and a VoIP telephone connection.

And at a price which will suit your pocket.

And one other thing - I am currently on ntl Broadband here at my parents house (600Kb service). Although it is quite good, I also find lots of problems which other people also experience with ntl's cache, including services where you need to login, such as ebay: if you can get a service like Zen, who are a smaller provider than BT or ntl, then I think you will get a better service.
