I don't know, but it does do an authentication or a validation or whatever it's called in the process of installation.

there are ways around that. some would suggest it involves replacing a single dll in the installer.

course one could invest in the genuine article. On microsoft's own "OMG UR A PIRATE" page there's a link to a real bargain (pro for just £79)

IE7watch update : delete browsing history deletes passwords too. how annoying. on firefox you can tick/untick boxes to decide what the big purge does.

also, have you noticed that you cannot delete the icon from the desktop? it keeps coming back!

Oddly that happens in the windows explorer view of the desktop and not the actual desktop itself.

OK well I had to install firefox today as I needed to turn off the CSS on a myspace page so I could actually read it.

Essentially, IE7 is a great leap forward from IE6. however it still lags behind firefox. Some thngs are pretty major, others are small but annoying.

 lack of decent password manager.
When I visit myspace i'm used t firefox filling in both the username and the password for me. Now I haven't been able to get this to work the same on IE so far. I'm not sure if it exists in the same way given the inconsistencies of the "do you want to save this password" box popping up.

 rendering style.
possibly because i've become so used to the way mozilla renders stuff, but it's just odd in places. little niggles. although it's one hell of an improvement over 6

to be honest where it excels is printing (which is fab) and memory, firefox does seem a big greedy at times when you've been using tabs all day and then want to play a big quicktime movie.

that "click to activate" thing is annoying in IE, nd firefox's printing isn't due to be decent until v3. I dunno.

i'd agree with that - i've been using ie7, ff2, and opera 9 over the last few days and whilst i think ie7 is a lot better than ie6 - page rendering is very nippy - like i said over at tvf, the fact that there is no mouse gestures or advert blocking makes it pretty much unusable for me.

opera - a great browser and it is a real pitty that so many web pages are not coded to support it. i think it is slower to start on my pc than both firefox and ie and i don't think rendering time great either. it seems that the cache isn't very efficient - take ages to load random elements which should be in the cache and i couldn't get the spell checker to work (if anybody knows how to, let me know - following the instructions on the knowledgebase didn't fix it)

firefox 2 is fab, really liking the inline spell checker - if you haven't tried it yet, it puts a red squiggle under incorrectly spelt words. i've only been using it a few days and i really don't know how i managed without it now - an excellent feature.

the only thing which lets firefox down is that the plugins are still playing catch up with the new version - tabmix plus and a couple of themes don't work with the new 2.0 version of the browser. no big issue as those customisations can be achieved by tinkering in the aboutconfig preferences. but this is still one area where opera is better than ff - most of the features you'll ever need are right inside the browser by default and there is no need to download any other extensions.

You can get a pre-release version of tab mix plus for FF2 from the tmp website. Google tab mix plus and it is the second result.

I don't think the lack of extensions for a browser that hasn't officially been launched yet, is a fair criticism!
I've been using FF2 for a couple of weeks now (initially I was cautious because I had problems with the profiles in the pre-release versions of FF1), but it does seem like a nice improvement.
As the doctor said, inline spell checking works brilliantly (if only 68372039482653538097236 in the other place would make use of it). The new merged extension/extension window makes a difference too - it's the little things that help!
