Oh really? I have that too and didn't have anything installed during the beta period due to the incompatibilities. I might try unsintalling it and having a shot with MS security essentials.

I'm using MS Security Essentials and it seems to do the job with no problem so far. AVG which started off ok is now nasty and bloated.

I did notice while in Currys today a sign to say that their Tech Guys will be very happy to install Norton on your PC. They will only charge you £19.99 (on top of the software purchase price) to completely ruin your machine.

An interesting Kaspersky factoid: t'other half had been bad mouthing win7 since it came out for being slow on his PC and making it all grunt and what not.

Having uninstalled kaspersky himself, not only is it now flying, but his processor score went from 3.7 to 4.5!

glad I could help :)

Kaspersky is the reason I cant get a score, its a known issue - I like Kaspersky and going to see what the patch does before I decide. It is amazing they didnt spot that while testing it

I've gone off them, I feel the performance of their program has dipped significantly and their boss has recently gone on a strange little rant so I'm unsure where the company is heading.

Should I not be using AVG either now then? Its it really all bloated?

Must admit my PC has been a bit sluggish the last 12 months.

I gave up on AVG shortly after version 8 came out, it may have been much better featured but I found it to have a huge performance hit (both in itself and on the rest of the system) compared to the previous version.

I've been on Comodo Internet Security for the past year or so. Out of the box, it too is a bloated and intrusive product, but if you turn off everything except the basic anti-virus, it's quite snappy.

AVG couldn't keep out one of the most invasive viruses - "Virut" a few months ago - so I swapped to Comodo which worked very well. I'm currently seeing out a free trial of McAfee which came with my new laptop.

Get shot of it, Gavin. As has been said, from v8, AVG is just slow bloatware.

I've been using Avast anti-virus which seems to work pretty well for me.

Microsoft Security Essentials however appears to be very very good :)


Meanwhile, my main pet hate about explorer - that the folder tree doesn't expand as you go - has been solved. Turns out there is an option if you right click an empty section of the folder list / or in folder options.

Why the hell its not on by default is beyond me.

However, this came in an email a couple of days ago:
If you have visited the Expertzone Website recently you will know that we had to take the difficult decision to suspend the Windows 7 Specialist Programme and the entire rewards functionality until Monday 16th November.

Unfortunately, the UK Expertzone site was compromised through people who do not work for qualifying retailers finding a way of by-passing all of the current validation processes enabling them to receive the Windows 7 NFR and other rewards. Sadly this also affects Retail Sales Professionals that are not compromising the system and we are hoping that the following extra checks will allow us to resume normal service on Expertzone by Monday 16th November 2009.

After reviewing our existing validation processes, we have amended them with immediate effect and this is why you are receiving this e-mail so please read and action the following instructions very carefully.
