Blank DVDs

I'm about to buy some blank DVDs to transfer some recordings to as my Hard Disk Recorder is full and as I'm not an expert in this area I'm confused about all the different formats

DVD+R, DVD-R, DVD+RW, DVD-RW, DVD-RAM etc etc

Am I right in thinking that as technology has moved on, all formats are generally able to be played back (and edited if a re-writable version) in the same way on almost all recorders and players, so it doesn't really matter if I buy the + or the - version?

I was waiting for someone more knowledgeable to reply to this thread but in the absence of that I shall say that I've got a DVD recorder and player and I have used DVD+/-R interchangeably (never used DVD-ROM). So I would say it doesn't matter and that players and recorders support both formats. But that could just be a massive lie.

Sorry, I'm a total novice here too. Just saying what I see.

The + and - formats are the same, but the - format is the official format, and the + format is the unofficial format.
