Well I have just wasted an evening trying to install iPhone Software 3.0. After an hour of "Activation server is unavailable" it finally worked, and the progress bar started going across. Then it died and said an unknown error occurred (9). It then decided it was in no fit state to run and is in recovery mode. I can't recover it since the activaiton server is unavailable/overloaded again. It makes me furiosuly angry when artifical "problems" like activation get in my way. I'm going away from my PC for an extended period tomorrow too, and eviently I'll be without phone while a load of apple fanbois clog up the server trying to get a pointless 3.0 update they don't really need (yeah, I know I was one of them about an hour ago, but things are DIFFERENT now).

To top that off I have lost all the music I carefully synced to my iPhone. I spent considerable time doing that. Damn apple. Damn them all the way to hell.

My iPhone also updated perfectly happily at half seven. Installed, then took about six minutes to finish connecting and validating, and I'm away...

I've had nothing but trouble after installing 3.0. It actaully seems slower than the previous OS in some aspects, and I never much care for the landscape view in the first place since I like lying on my bed using my iPhone. Since I don't even get to use the Tethering feature I call it a load of unmitigated shite.

I was thinking of getting the iPhone 3G[S] before it was announced, since I've held off enough to want the third generation to replace my aging phone and iPod, but that update could've been so much more. I won't elaborate here, but I'll shamelessly plug my blog to direct you to my opinion of the WWDC announcements.

iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS users who don't give a shit about breaching O2's terms of use will love this site which you visit on your iPhone to enable Internet Tethering.

I've no idea how long it will last, but just to confirm: it works like a charm.

I'd just gone and copied that link from your facebook to paste here Row, but you beat me to it.

So whats the deal with the (albeit cheap) contract I have with Orange right now? I've got 12 months to go at £15 per month - I do hope they will let me change to an iPhone tariff before seeing this one out - although O2 didn't let their subscribers do that, did they?

Sincerely hope Orange take a different approach with existing customers. I always thought O2's tactic to treat iPhones as a different entity was pretty disgraceful.

I assume this is just the 3G, that's what the rumour mill has been saying, along with "9th October is when the o2 exclusivity expires". Here's hoping for a little bit of a price war before christmas!

Also, I note that highly tskably, o2 has priced the palm pre identically to the iphone 3g.

I don't want an iPhone.

I also don't think I want another Nokia as they really aren't keeping up with the game.

That said, the N78 that I currently have and which am due an upgrade for in a few weeks has a lot of good features on it and I don't want to lose functionality. So I want a camera of at least 5 megapixels with a flash and GPS. I think I'd also like an "always on" data tarriff. And Google Android looks interesting.

Suggestions?

The Orange deal is actually to sell both the 3G and 3GS. It's ultimately good news for whether you're with o2 or Orange because I dare say that Orange will be trying and come in a *little* lower than o2's pricing to try and tempt the customers to them instead. Of course it remains to be seen if the next generation iPhone after the 3GS will be made available on both networks which could draw a lot of existing customers away from o2 to Orange - so long as their contract allows it of course.

o2 isn't a bad network and is much improved compared to when I first joined them many years ago now. But their data network is the biggest let down for me, and this just hinders the use of the iPhone to its full potential when you're on the move. I couldn't comment on Orange's coverage but I would imagine they would eventually have a good thing going after the merger with T-Mobile.

Interesting times - although no doubt disappointing for o2 it was inevitable really as it had happened in many other markets. They can't deny that they've made their money out of it - and still could do so long as they're willing to perhaps strike first with a price war against Orange. Well I can hope...
