Where has my free space gone?

Okay, so I have a terabyte hard drive, which I recall having around 4gb remaining, until one day I noticed that it has dropped to around 70kb. I've just deleted around 20gb worth of files, ran Disk Utility on OS X, repaired the disk, and now its risen to around 500kb.

Being 1tb, it's pretty tricky to back up, so how can I solve this issue? Many thanks

This is crying out for the classic "format D:" response we normally give, but that probably won't be much use!

the easiest thing for you to do is to a search for files above a certain size, say 50,000 kb and see what's eating your space.

but in any case, don't do an 'indexed' search, do an old style directory crawl and see what you find - not sure how you do that in os x, however.

quite likely that there's a temporary file of some sort gobbling up the space.

make sure you've set your preferences to 'show hidden and system files' or whatever it's called in os x otherwise you might miss the culprit.
