One of the many inconsistencies in the UK signage system. To any foreigner or dumb person it's confusing that

means the opposite to

Why, I need to know, in these politically correct times, are both the pictures of a male bicycle, complete with a crossbar?

Surely this is sexism in the extreme and ought not to be allowed any more. Should I write to the Daily Mail, I wonder?

What if your bicycle doesn't have a crossbar? Presumably none of the restrictions apply.

Not really the opposite: the latter informs that cycling is prohibited, which would mean that the former means cycling is compulsory.

I tended to look at them as "Cycling allowed" and "Cycling Not Allowed"

Mind you - look at this one in t' colonies - they got t' right idea.

Something _just_ relevant enough to this thread is "Things people are taught wrongly in school". As a science charlatan I have plenty of these but the one that is most consistently wrong is teachers' insistence that water evaporates from the sea, rises and condenses all by itself to form clouds. In reality it needs something to condense onto (dust, soot, pollen, that sort of thing) and it was covered rather nicely in the final 20 minutes of BBC Four's "The Weather" [iplayer link] last week.

Just by AMAZING coincidence (of course) the demonstration given was filmed in the room next to my office and explained by a guy in my group. Not that I would be so transparent as to post the link because of THAT.

Ooo, I watched that programme, it was quite good, though like most televisual science programmes was pitched in a way that a 10 year old could understand.

It was good to have Philip Eden on it, he's an excellent meteorologist.

I don't get phonics. We get kids come in the library asking to book computers, with all sorts of exotic names. When I ask them to spell them, I get "Kah Ruh Yuh Suh Tuh Ah Luh Luh" - instead of Kay Are Why Ess Tee Ay Ell Ell. I won't take What guff are they teaching them in school nowadays that they can't spell using letters?

Ah but it's not *wrong* is it. It's just the other way of pronouncing them.

What's wrong with this phrase, lifted from the Telegraph, Digital Spy et al. ?

"But a spokesman for the BBC said: "There are no plans to take Chris off the Breakfast Show. He has a hugely successful show with over seven million viewers."

Semantics aside, given that the original story in the Scum was written by the oh-so-ironically named Gordon Smart, I'd take it with a dumper truck of salt.
