Have a go voicing this Christmas Presto jingle - "Tinned Peached, just 6 and a half pence"... and so on.

Hours of fun.

This is how I remember the Presto stores changing... I MIGHT be wrong but bear with me.

Presto stores became Gateway, and then some Gateway stores became Safeway then Somerfield, some became Food Giant and others LoCost. Then Food Giant became Co-Operative Pioneer as did LoCost. Today Co-Operative Pioneer are still running (as the 'Co-Operative Food') and some have been re-branded yet again as Somerfield, but this will change soon as the Co-Op (or Coey as we called it in Leicestershire) bought them out. Some stores will be rebranded to Co-Operative whilst others, I think I remember, were sold off to Sainsbury's, Tesco and ASDA. As we all know Safeway is now Morrisons.

On the subject of ASDA, the first ASDA Essentials store will open in Pen-Y-Lan, Cardiff in the next few weeks. It was an old Woolworth's store on the Albany Road. It was said it was going to be a Sainsbury's but I think the ASDA green on the hoardings give it away plus there are screw marks in a trinagle, line, line and triangle like: /\ | | /\ been put up on the outside of the building, so bit of a giveaway!

In Bournemouth the OLD ASDA store on Castle Lane West was a previously-small supermarket chain (but the name escapes me) but when the knocked it down to rebuld the new Castlepoint Shopping Centre they found a lot of old tinned stock in an unknown storeroom! The best before date on it was 1973! ASDA were previously called Associated Dairies (as that's what ASDA stands for) but in the North of England they were called Asdale, then later rebranded as ASDA Dales. Here in South Wales we have Johnstone Stores which sell only Nisa Today's-branded stock but there are a few of them!

EDIT: I forgot the Safeway bit so I have edited it to match!

oh that's good thinking. i like that.

all the prestos however, at least in the north east / borders became safeways. the one in north shields did, as did the kelso one.

Anyone of the Tynemouth / Whitley Bay area might remember the strange standalone presto near to Preston Grange shopping arcade. It seemed to sit there like a lump despite a modern safeway being down the road whilst the large morrisons was built. Any ideas on that?

In Blackwood there used to be a Gateway's AND a Leo's. Leo's went on to become Pioneer, and then just plain old Co-Operative. And it's now going to be a Sainsbury's.
