After smuggly thinking I had avoided the Christmas/New Year fluey/cold bug, I can officially say I now feel absolutely shit.

It started with a chesty cough this afternoon but in the past couple of hours I have started to vegetate.

I'm off to bed now, where I will probably remain for a few days.

Anyone else had/have this? And any good old-wives tales?

My normal trick is lots of fluids and Vitamin C.

gargling with soluble asprin (standard disclaimers apply) does wonders for sore throats.

It will last seven days if treated, or a week if not, as my dear old mum used to say.

After shaking off the last cold at the start of the month, I'm feeling hellish again.

Do forumers have any good old-wives tales for getting over the common cold?

I'm just sipping coffee and swallowing Nurofen, which is helping...

Rest, vitamin C and take plenty of fluids.

And, I don't know, you might want to establish why you keep picking up all these bugs. Are you run down? Not eating properly? Having too many nights out?

Think on and look sharp, Row.

I seem to perpetually have a cold. This is actaully quite nice since it means I almost never notice any difference. The consistency at least is reassuring.

As Gav says, rest, vitamin C, fluids. Taking Vitamin C all the time can reduce the frequency of the colds, but to start taking it after the cold starts won't really do anything to shorten the duration of the cold.

The chemist gave me something called "Pholcodine Linctus BP" which quickly took my cough away. I found Beechams Active Cold Relief tablets and a sinex spray helped me feel better, too.
