Now then, I don't ever back up my two computers and ideally I need some kind of NAS drive. Thing is, I hate all these power bricks I've got going on and I'd also like to shift my printer into a cupboard because just looking at its ugly face enrages me. If I get a Time Capsule for about £180 (might be a touch less with the right discount) then I can do all that plus replace my router with a draft-n one (which my mac, at least, will support). Has anyone seen anything that beats this in price using separate hardware? Also, does anyone know of shittitude with the TC? I've not turned up much either way but perhaps I'm being feeble under Steve Jobs' reality distortion field.
Please advise.
Apple's time capsule
I like it and just ordered one to replace my dead router and to have a functioning NAS which isn't held together with gum and a fraying FireWire lead. Whether or not you'll find a better equivalent for the same price is a little questionable seeing as it is one lovely feat of engineering. I'd say to go with it if you're just looking to have a NAS device and a pure N network in one box which works right away, yes it's succumbing to Steve's RDF but it's easier this way.
This was my thinking, but looking around for the same specs of a NAS drive and Gigabit/draft N router there's very little difference. Using my super special slacker discount I can get one for £175, it turns out. 500GB should be enough for anyone
Do feel free to add anything you discover about it when it turns up!

So, struggling free of the RDF for just a moment, I'm now tempted to get this...

Beacause it's £50 cheaper and SHOULD work with time machine, be a print server, be neat and tidy and will also theoretically do xbox streaming, linux hackery and bittorrent (should I be so evil). I may immediately regret this decision.

Speaking of which, I am really sad there isn't a nice way to do bittorrent downloading by proxy. It really should be possible in this cloud-y age to get a nice remote virtual machine running that happily bittorrents away without Virgin Media threatening to cut me off.
I would use Amazon ec2 but I coudln't figure out how to actaully create a machine on it and nor did I like the stupid pricing. If anyone had any luck with the former issue I'd appreciate the help

When I was in halls, I used to use an SSH tunnel via my server Stateside...though admittedly it stopped me from quite being able to take advantage of *all* of JANET's bandwidth.cdd wrote:Speaking of which, I am really sad there isn't a nice way to do bittorrent downloading by proxy. So I took the plunge at got the Linkstation and so far all I miss is 802.11n. Having gotten time machine working over the network I can safely say it is *awesome* and I'm pretty sure it'll save my bacon at least once over the coming months.

All a touch moot now but I got my Time Capsule today though I'll likely be toddling to my nearest Apple store to go trade up should a new version be introduced next week. Anyway, I already have Time Machine running on one of my systems but now I can do it wirelessly to one place for all my systems on my g/n network (never ever backup first time around wirelessly even on a N network, use the Ethernet port as Gigabit is your friend) and it's nice to have the old NAS setup put to a better use now.
The reason for it being g/n and not pure N like I wanted is because of my iTouch simply not seeing it and me forgetting that it only notices b/g networks. So far I love it and can finally centralise my iTunes library instead of having two separate ones which were in constant mortal battle to stay out of sync with each other.

Sorry nini, it's my fault. Whenever I seriously think of getting something from Apple it's always VERY shortly before they upgrade it. I normally buy the thing and then find out the next week there's a new one, but in this case not so much

Oh, if a newer model comes out two weeks after the purchase date then you can actually go and trade up to the newest version less 10% or so. Pay 10% (sometimes 20%) of the product and you can exchange for the newer model. This usually only applies if you brought it online as new and not refurbed or from an Apple store.
