Marvellous news. It's hard not to feel a little more optimistic for the future now.

A great relief too that that Alaskan nutjob isn't going to be one frail old man away from the most important job on earth.

It's the most amazing thing ever, but I still can't help having a few doubts about him :?

Yes I can imagine the Daily Mail over the next few weeks.

"What a result - and change is coming to Amercia. But is Obama a terrorist loony worse than Bush?"

This is truly a defining moment for not just America, but for the world and I think Spencer sums it up by saying optimism might just return.

But overall don't forget, whoever is President - there is a massive back room staff that will guide them forward and make sure nothing too disastrous happens.

No, I don't mean that. I'm just concerned that he won't have the backbone to make tough decisions when required to do so. He seems like the kind of person who wouldn't say boo to a goose -- but sometimes it's necessary.

I fail to see how you come to this conclusion. I think it's a fairly safe assumption that to get to the position of US President you have to be exceptionally tough, determined and driven, especially in his case having rather overcome the odds and inevitable prejudice.

Incidentally, has anyone ever really found it necessary to say boo to a goose... or wildfowl in general?

I hope you're right that Obama is tough enough for every aspect of the job. Let's not get complacent, is all I'm saying. There's no doubt this is the dawning of a new era but sadly the world will never be a utopia no matter who's in power in the USA.

Love the fact that Kenya is having an impromptu national holiday tomorrow. Why do we never do that here? We could have had one after London won the olympic bid, for instance.

Well, SOME people got a day off the day after the london bid won...

Anyway Chie, you're stating the bleeding obvious (utopia is unachievable) and wrong (dawning of a new era) and making yourself look stupid.

I absolutely would.

And Sput, you haven't contributed anything in the way of opinion on this subject, all you've done is jump in at the end to nitpick at other people's views, as usual.
