The Register today reports that an unpatched Windows PC connected to the internet with no firewall or virus protection "is likely to be infected within 4 minutes".

No way!

I think the last version of Norton I used was 1998 or something about that vintage, before it got bloated and slowed everything down to a stop.

I wouldn't use McAfee for exactly the same reason.

I'm now an AVG fan and, have to say, quite happy with version 8. Mind you, I'm on a DualCore, whizzo-bongo processor and two gigs of memory, so probably haven't noticed bloatedness spreading to AVG yet.

I DO tend to go to the Symantec virus database to look things up, however. You'll be pleased to hear that that's the extent of my use of them.

So which is the virus that causes Barcy's keyboard output to scramble itself on a random basis?

Kasperski is my security programe of choice - its not expensive and is not a resource hog like the rest of 'em.
Most people have not heard of it but its worth looking at.

PC World seems to be flogging it as its AV of choice at the moment on its TV adverts.

Either you have a very orange face, in which case I recommend sun protection, or you need to change your avatar, as they only allow faces. :)

It's certainly hovering near something big and red, anyways.
