Talking of schools, my sister's high school is banning the wearing of ties in a casual way and replacing them with clip-ons that can't be adjusted, due to complaints from a few parents.

I find the whole thing unbelievable.

I managed to get through everybody in double quick time, so I knocked off an hour early.

It was actually OK. One mother exclaimed 'Oh my, your hands are softer than I'd expected', and another told me that I was actually 'a jolly good chap'. I had a few heated confrontations too just to balance things out, and after one father muttered that I was a 'prickly poof' under his breath I was forced to impress upon him the fact that had he said something like that outside the confines of the school I would have made sure that procreation was well and truly out of the question for him.

Uniform - I don't have any interest in it tbh. I guess some kids think I'm a bit of a soft touch, but in Spain we never had uniforms. So I don't particularly agree with them. There's something a bit overtly colonial about them which grates slightly.

School uniforms do serve a purpose in that they remove the need for sartorial competition. In any school there are always going to be children from better off and less well off families. It's a competitive enough environment without adding the pressure of who is wearing the latest fashion.

I quite like the idea of those 'clip-on' ties, not least from the improved health and safety aspect. The police force have used them for years on the basis that it's difficult to strangle someone with a tie that comes away in your hand.

SN2005, you demonstrated more restraint than I would've done in the face of such mutterings from a bigot. At the very least I would've walked off and refused to discuss their child's education at all. It's amazing that these people are still around, let alone voice their opinions in public.

Those belt things seem awfully dangerous too. Here's to the days when they won't need to learn how to tie a tie and everyone has elasticated waistbands! Oh, and velcro instead of zips so there's no danger of getting caught in the mornings. Is there a sort of spiritual link between HR and H&S folks?
