So UNPRECEDENTED it was done 40 years ago with a unified theme saying 'NEW PENCE' which lasted for 11 years!

The design and the entire currency was changed over 3 years between 1968 and 1971! I don't think anything would match that.

I like the new designs.

Having had another look, and a few pints of Landlord and a few Jacques (but that's another story) I've taken to them - especially when you see the close-up shots on the BBC

Yeah, but it had an entirely different purpose back then: decimalisation, and the "New Pence" text was the only common element. This time around it's purely for design purposes and no other reason, which is what I meant by unprecedented.

Surprised Jamez hasn't mentioned the fact the designer is a Taffy. Matt Dent is from Bangor.

It's interesting that some people have identified similarities between the new coins and the Euro currency, suggesting that the government is softening the public up for later scrapping the pound sterling. I actually assumed the opposite. I would have thought that if you're going to the trouble of redesigning your coins, you'd probably have an intention of keeping them for some time. Or am I just reading too much into it?

In terms of the design though, I think they're smashing. But, I do agree with Gav's point that it's odd not to have any numerals on them to indicate their value - only the text. Not exactly friendly for tourists I would have thought - who frankly have enough trouble trying to figure out which coin is which!

Not really "some people" - just Jamez with his crazy conspiracy theories.

A bit like CraigF used to be on this forum before he was sectioned.

It was more waxy than plastic - or am I getting confused with someone else?
