Way back in 2005, the Royal Mint began a competition to redesign the face of the UK's coins - and today's the day for the results : http://www.royalmint.com/newdesigns/des ... ealed.aspx

Personally, I'm not too sure - at first glance I thought 'wow' and then 'maybe not'! It's just that the 5p looks odd with no 'blank space', unlike the others in the new design, for the words 'five pence'.

Still, they're on the way to our pockets. What are your thoughts?

Ha! No wonder my 'new thread' suddenly fell at the last hurdle! I'd added a poll, but I've deleted the thread now. Perhaps you could add one?

I quite like the designs. They are traditional but with a modern graphic slant on an ancient idea of using coats of arms on coinage.

I quite like them with the exception of the 10p and 2p bits which have squares on them. I never like mixing squares with circles like that. Other than that I think they'll be rather classy. I like the mixture of "flat" and "textured" metal.

However tsk @ there being no coins with holes in the middle. You'd think they could take a lead.

I guess the backs will be the same?

You're wrong, cdd. These are the 'backs' (reverse) as you put them. The Queen is on the 'front' (obverse), her image changes with her advancing years quite often (about every decade).

That would require a complete recall and reissue of those coins without holes in, as they would be of a different weight and not work in vending machines. Your 'tsk' is therefore inappropriate!

Pedant! Since when has Metropol been a forum of accuracy?

What is it with you and the 5 yen coin, cdd? Always talking about its' hole, you perv. There will not be a 2p cockring anytime soon mister.

I don't think they're changing the £2, are they?

Over all, not bad. I totally agree with the 'Euro-esque' tag though.
I guess we'll get used to them!

Oh, hello, by the way :D

Hello Kez, welcome to Metropol.

Just one thing - avatars should contain pictures only of your face, please.

Would you mind changing it?

On the topic though - I think they're fab. So unexpected.

Odd that there are no numerals on them, however.
