I have Norton Ghost 2003, if that's any use to you Gavin. It's a very useful program and certainly saves alot of fannying about with set-ups.

I would appreciate some help regarding my old PC (It's a Packard-Bell, bought in late 2005). First the power unit failed, after just 12 months, then last Christmas the motherboard failed (I suspect it's the motherboard). I simply went out and bought another base unit, connected my D drive with all my personal files, and I was back up and running within a couple of hours - albeit with Vista Home Premium instead of XP Home.

It seems a waste to ditch the old PC base unit. It's currently sitting in my spare bedroom which has become something of a "PC graveyard".

Fnaar.

However, I was anticipating more constructive responses. It seems a shame to throw away what was essentially a good CPU. I only suspect it's the motherboard as the unit would power-up but not boot, despite attempts with either a boot-disk or changing the master HDD. I've resurrected old PCs from the dead before, but normally it was something less than the motherboard.

eBay the CPU then. I got £30 for one that I'd had for 4 years a few months back.

I'm sure that makes sense, but I am actually a hoarder of things (my old car sits in the garage underneath me, whilst my current car sits outside in the drive).

I am more tempted to try to get a new motherboard, fit it into the Packard-Bell and cannibalise the other CPUs for graphics cards/HDDs/DVD-RWs into one functioning optimal unit. But, then of course I'd be reluctant to part with my handywork and leave it as a spare PC on my home wireless network.

I did indeed avoid any P-B make when I was scurrying about looking for a new PC at Christmas. They seem to have a bad reputation. However, post-cannibalisation of the other CPUs the only thing saying "Packard-Bell" will be the shell.

By the time I retired my first PC there was little of the original hardware left, and even that has been re-used a few times.

The only thing original left in my PC is the floppy-disk drive
Packard Bell seems to be less popular these days. Gateway's gone the same way.
