A word of advice. Don't use Green Flag! The first time ever i've needed to use them in the last 10 years and they really let me down today. I've wasted a full day and lost half a days takings. I am not happy. My clients today were apparently very understanding.

So remember never use green flag. I only had them cos it was all in with my car insurance.

So can anyone tell me who's bestest from personal experience and value for money. The AA or RAC?


Oh and one other question.. If you get a flat and have no spare. Is it illegal to travel without a spare. In my case today it was only absent mindedness that it wasn't in the boot today.

Had a very bad day!!! :(


And a positive note on todays adventure. Watling tyres are absolutely brilliant. They didn't have my tyres but helped me out above and beyond the call of duty.

I had Green Flag when it came with my insurance. I have to say the only time I called them out (my car wouldn't start after work) they were there within about 20 minutes, solved the problem, then followed me home just incase I broke down again.

Of course I don't have recovery as I'm not allowed to drive until May 2008 :roll: (so the car doesn't go anywhere).

Eeek! I've got that Green Flag cover free with my insurance too. Hope I never need to use it.

In the current issue of Which Magazine there's a survey on breakdown patrols; AA are the overall winners, RAC are a very close 2nd, Britannia Rescue 3rd, Green Flag 4th.

Oh, and you don't have to carry a spare tyre by law.

A few months ago back in May, the immobiliser on my car went a bit beserk. It was 11pm and I was stuck in a fairly remote part of the Welsh countryside.

I called Green Flag and the woman told me that someone would be with me within an hour. The bloke showed up in about 45 minutes. Not too bad.

Read the small print before you get caught out. When i was sold it i asked them if it covered me for everything for breakdown and recovery, they said yes. I now find out i wasn't.
I know now i should have read it properly so they missold it to me.

Indeed not, but if you do it has to be legal. This is no different to how it has been as far as I can remember.

Apparently that is not the case.
According to a BBC News article from 2004, you are under no legal obligation to carry a spare, and if you do, you're under no legal obligation to keep said tyre roadworthy.

Of course, if the spare tyre is not roadworthy and you then drive on the road with it and subsequently get caught then you risk getting a fine for driving on it. The fact it sat in your boot for months on end in a non-fit state of usage is irrelevant.

However, the MOT test rules are extremely clear.

If you haven't got a spare tyre, so be it; no problem.

If you have got a spare, then it has to pass all the tests and have sufficient tread, be correctly inflated, etc, etc.

The moral being, take the spare out of the boot when you take the car for an MOT.

Why not put something else in the boot instead? Hair from a murdered child doesn't need to be up to any particular standard to pass the MOT.

The cheap SCART leads you can get in pound shops are crap. I wouldn't waste my money.

The heavy duty gold-plated ones are nice to use, though. I'd never buy cables or other peripherals from Currys/PC World/Dixons/Comet, though. Overpriced shit.

Local TV/Radio electrical shop will do you a far better deal on most things. Only dull sheeple buy stuff from Currys/PC World, etc.etc.
