New £20 note in circulation

More of an information post than anything else seeing as alot of the general public & shopkeepers don't know about these, the new £20 note was released this week (Tuesday 13th March 2007) and this time round they are very different to the previous two designs

Why don't the B of E issue £100 notes as we have here?

Wow, you're right, that is very different. I imagine loads of dozy old shopkeepers around the country will get confused.

No. Actually good point, I should have said from cashpoints & banks.

An incident did occur near where I live, my newsagent recieved one yesterday and said the bloke that he took it off of was a bit cheesed off as he tried to spend it in the off licence over the road who refused it & accused him of having a fake £20 :roll:

Regarding the £100 note I'm not sure why, they did about 90 years ago but stopped before/during WWI. If they do drop the £5 note & replace it with a coin (which has been rumoured for the past ten years) they may do then as that would mean the Bank Of England would only issue three different notes

seems odd to decide to have a scottish person on the english £20, surely they haven't run out of english people! after all - you don't see english people celebrated on scottish banknotes, as (quite rightly) the scottish notes tend to celebrate scottish people and history.

i would have liked to have seen diana on the £20 - just for the sheer campery of it all.

Agree with regards to Diana, if they decided to change the design 5-10 years down the line there would be a public outcry (from The Sun & Mail at least) if they were to withdraw it.

It doesn't bother me that there is a Scot on a BoE note, although as you say there are plenty of English/Welsh people (afterall Wales is the only country of the union that doesn't issue it's own regional notes) throughout history that could have gone on the back. Winston Churchill, Isambard Kingdom Brunel, Aneurin Bevan (founder of NHS) for example.

A report in the Evening Standard said that in a survey some people would like to see a sportsman like David Beckham on the back :roll: Blody Heat Magazine generation

Great to see an Economist featured on a bank note - and I really despair at people complaining about a Scot on a Bank of England note.

Can't stand the design though; the current set are a very nice balance of traditional and modern.

I can understand that, I didn't like the design when I saw it on the website but having seen one in circulation they do look better, this time it is mainly a very dark purple colour as opposed to the light mauve on the outgoing one.

Agree with you on the people complaining bit, one woman in The Scum said she would never have a £20 in her purse again because there was a Scot on it :roll: what a moron!

The new £20 banknote is actually quite nice, and it's good that they have reverted to the style currently used for the £50 note. The £5 and £10 notes will follow in due course in the same style.

Originally I thought it a little odd to have a Scot on the reverse, but it actually celebrates his contribution to UK economic strategy rather than his genetic origins. Considering it is a banknote and the tool of the main financial institution of the country that seems quite reasonable.

I don't think we are ever going to see Diana on a bank note. She appeared on a special issue coin (and a stamp I believe) - I think that's the most tribute she is likely to get.

If buisiness owners are not aware of the new design then they must've ignored the publicity material sent to them by the banks and obviously have their eyes closed when standing in the queue waiting to pay-in at the bank. There have been large posters advertising the new design for some time.

Err... have you ever seen the current £50. It is nothing like the new 20 (I have been withdrawing large ammounts from cash machines to see if I can get my hands one one but no luck yet).

This is the first note in Series F, there will be a Series F £10 late this year or early next year, and a new £50 should follow about the same amount of time after the £10.

Whether they do a fiver for series F will remain to be seen, I am guessing they might go down the coin route. If they do go for a note, it would be at least 2 maybe three years down the line, so depending on inflation, there could well be a coin.

If they do go for a £5 coin, there will almost certainly be a £100 note.

I meant to say that the design is more like the current £50 than the £5 or £10 in terms of the font and general style. They have moved away from the large "modern" looking number and gone for the more traditional look.

I'm sure if you had gone into the bank they would have found one of the new style ones for you rather than keep withdrawing large amounts from the "hole in the wall".
