i'm off work today and i fancied one of my special grilled cheese and bacon butties for my dinner, i've got loads of bacon, but uh-oh, the bread is a bit nasty and the cheese has run out.
i have about £3.50 kicking around in my car for parking tickets etc, so i venture off to the local shop to get some decent bread and cheese.
the bread i wanted was £1.70 and the cheese was £1.99 (it was labelled as £1.50)
so, when i got to the checkout, i didn't have enough (and i didn't take my wallet as i thought i'd have plenty of money)
i drove to tesco instead and not only managed to get my bread and cheese, i got crips and a newspaper.
now, i'm all for supporting my local shop, i don't want to live in a world where the only food you can buy is tesco own label over-processed bland rubbish but really, nearly £4 for bread and cheese? these are hardly luxury items.
it's quite something when it's actually cheaper to shop at a petrol station than your local shop.

From what I understand, talking to my local newsagent, back before Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury, etc. where as big as they were the local shopkeep used to get fairly large discounts if they bought in bulk, unfortunately due to Tesco's "lowest prices ever" campaign they have out and the fact they buy a huge bulk of items the suppliers (Cadbury, Walkers, Coca Cola, etc) don't offer them many reductions or much profit from each item, which then forces them to drive up their prices.Dr Lobster* wrote:i'm off work today and i fancied one of my special grilled cheese and bacon butties for my dinner, i've got loads of bacon, but uh-oh, the bread is a bit nasty and the cheese has run out.

Those that have stayed the same apparently are in huge debts and end up eventually closing down.
I dread the day when I'll have to buy a newspaper out of a Tesco or Sainsbury

£1.70 for a loaf of bread?! 
That's a bit steep! In all the shops I've been to in London and around the UK buying loaves the've been no more than just over £1!
I bet this is all Gordon Brown's doing... just you watch the next Budget - I bet there'll be a bread tax!

I'm all for Local Shops, one problem where I live is that all of them and Newsagents in the same area have also closed down, but it doesn't help when you have Morrisons, Somerfield and Sainsburys Local within half a mile of each other.
All of what were old Newsagents or Local Shops have either been demolished or converted into Hair Salons or Fancy Restaurants, it's a shame really, but it makes sense as the supermarkets provide the things people need cheaper.
In fact we must be the only place where we have lost a Kwik Save and no food shop actually replaced it.

Our old Post office was converted into a fireplace shop. My old greengrocer became a vets. Not good for the village... as all the fruit and veg in the big shops are crap.

I use my local shop quite a lot. Every Sunday i go round get some Swiss Roll (89p and its huge, and nice) along with a Sandwich which is £2.29 - its worth it though. Some prices are sky high, sometimes its value for money.
