I am trying to rebuild my pc and runing the XP Pro setup from a CD. The inital loading works ok (ie loading Generic CD Rom driver etc) gets to Setup is loading windows and the PC just shuts down. This is before I get to do anything (for example chose the drive to install windows etc.)

This happens on the Pro CD and als the Computer recovery CD Rom.

Any ideas why?????

these sorts of things are quite difficult to diagnose.

you can try to turn off any optimised settings in your bios - when your pc starts up can you press the relevant key combination to get into the bios setup screen (usually f1, del or f12).

make a note of all the settings and if you've got an option to 'load fail safe defaults', go for that.

if not:

have a look for settings which contain the terms cache / shadow and make sure they are a disabled.

specifically, look for: memory shadow ram, video shadow ram, internal cache, external cache, and any built-in anti-virus or boot sector protection.

if you've got an option that specifies a plug and play (or pnp) operating is installed, make sure it is disabled.

also, if you've got options for memory speeds, turn everything down the lowest (or slowest value) and see what happens.

if you've got mixed memory modules on your motherboard, sometimes the above can fix the problem - you can usually restore the settings to what they were before hand.

Although I can't help with your current problem, once you have the PC sorted it would be a good idea to create an image using a program such as "Ghost". This would allow you to restore all your setting very quickly should you ever find yourself in this position again.

I've used my different images on various PCs, it's saved me many wasted hours of resetting Operating System, Office, everything else.

I have an (almost legal) version of "Ghost 2003" if you would like a copy. (Just don't tell Norton - lol)

hi thanks for that - have got ghost and the plan was to start after the next rebuild - been about 12 months now.

Will give those other things a go see what happens.

Have managed to reinstall before - and nothing on the system has changed
