Hello Metropoliers, just a quickie... anyone here ever been to Iceland? (The country, not the shop) I've just booked a holiday there for the end of the month, need to top up my tan you see, and was just wondering if anyone has been and could recommend any activities, sights, advice, stuff like that.

Am staying in Reykjavik, end of the month... are the Northern Lights visible at the end of January?

Cheers!

You won't get much of a Tan. I was there in July and it rained every other day. The Blue Lagoon is a must. it's near the airport. You can soak in lovely hot water while surrounded by volcanic rocks covered in snow

I studied drama with a girl from Reykjavik. She told me that every Friday night the main square fills with all of the young people from the city and across the island. Hundreds and hundreds of them. Not so much in the winter though.

Sorry, can't recall much else of what she told me. Other than the spectacular "white-out" experience in the snow plains where it's like being in a tupperware box. Or was it Billy Connolly who said that?

I vaguely recall an Icelandic drink called "Black Death" which you drank by the thimble. She told me I'd feel sick after the second and she was right.

I'm distracted now because I've just found her website and she's done well for herself.

Look her up for me and tell her Gavin sends love.

I'm told a pint will cost you about £8. Take lots of money. A very wealthy friend went there a few years ago and is still complaining about the price of food and drink.

No, it's a place in Iceland.

The northern lights have no real dependence on the season here on Earth, it's pot luck - clear night and a big red solar candle

I find this thread offensive following the death of Magnus Magnusson.

I'm hoping to be able to pay my respects to Magnus when I get there. Maybe by sitting on something big, black and shiny.

Cheers for all the tips so far guys.
