I haven't tried defender, or anything else.

Should I try it or is there a better version of the same thing out there?

I use Windows Defender, alongside Windows Live OneCare, and both seem to be working fine for me. I also have F-Secure, but only because the university said we had to, and that seems fine too.

Try Defender and see. It's free and shouldn't be too problematic.
