due to a fault with my car window, it needed to be stuck up with masking tape until a new part arrived but now it's been fixed i'm left with an unsightly sticky goo.

the garage have tried to get it off for me (which they didn't have to do, cos i stuck it on there) but there is some of it still left- any magical way i can get it off?

Try baby oil! Or even Cd cleaning fluid. Either of those should help without perishing any rubber seals too much or WD40. WD40 is magical stuff. DO NOT use nail varnish remover the acetone will rot the rubber seals i learnt that lesson a long long time ago. WD40 should do the trick. Do ya know it even removes crayons from living room walls and biro from leather suites.

Citrus-based washing up liquids are good for getting rid of glue residue (What you really need is Goo Gone but it's not easy to find over here!)

Smells of nice oranges too! OK, it smells of highly repulsive oranges but oranges none-the-less :-)
I often get sticky gunk stuck on my bits and pieces (my biggest annoyance is when you buy glasses and they have those stupid stickers stuck to them which you peel off and they leave a gooey residue!) - and it's wonderful for that.

I use this stuff a lot to remove labels from containers used by youth group expeditions:
