Computer problem

Hey everyone on here,

I'm having a big problem on my computer. I'm computer literate, so I'll usually be able to do anything you ask me to do without expanation.

Okay, let me break it down to you...

When I start up my computer, I get the following error message...



This particular one shows MSN Messenger in the title bar, but there are a few others that I see in there as well.

When I try loading up other programs, like Picasa, I get messages like this one...



I did a Google search and found several pages regarding the failed installation on Service Pack 2. I cannot find the hotfix blah blah blah which it tells me to remove in Add or Remove Programs. I'm not even sure that I did try to install SP2. System Restore won't work either.

Any help on this would be very, very, very, very, very, very appreciated.

Thanks for the help, but unfotunately due to reasons which I won't explain now (too tedious), I cannot acces the recovery console. It's not part of the problem itself, in fact I'm on my Windows XP now in Firefox, but it's about the only program I can access apart from Office.

something somewhere (and it's really quite impossible to tell without looking at your list of running processes and the run part of your registry) has damaged a core windows library or is trying to intercept some windows api calls.

if re-installing service pack 2 or reinstalling windows itself doesn't fix it (if you can indeed do this) i'm afraid the best option for you is going to be full reinstall.

just remember to install sp2, your firewall and antivirus software before you even attempt to go online - pre-sp2 windows installs still get infected within minutes with the blaster malware variants out there

Shlwapi.dll is part of Internet Explorer. The easiest solution is to uninstall and reinstall Internet Explorer.

Except this can't be on Windows XP, as IE6 is built-in. So the next best solution is a Windows repair.

Boot off your XP CD -> Press any key -> Enter -> F8 -> R. Do not press R on the first screen. Run it through, bash product key in when prompted, let it run.
