A friend of mine mentioned to me today that Apple are releasing a new iPod model next week. By what I heard from him it's nothing different to the current model except this one has a 16:9 screen.
I've looked on the Technology section of BBC News, Wikipedia and the iPod website and there is no mention of a new model being released.
Is my friend talking bollocks or are Apple keeping quiet about this one?
New iPod???

that's the one - seen that somewhere too - it looks really good actually - i think it's only a matter of time before mobile phones are one big lcd display like that, it's the only way they'll be able to make the screen bigger without making the phone bigger.
it will be an interesting development. i just wonder how easy they'll make it to copy dvds to it - if you have to run it through a conversion process it's likely to take ages and put people off.

I don't want an iPod because I can't be arsed with all this proprietory format nonsense. I am simply not going to convert whole libraries, and stick to purchasing from iTunes. Not going to happen.
It's driving me nuts because Apple are the only ones with the R&D budget to come up with such otherwise brilliant devices. The full size touch screen one looks like a "PADD" from Star Trek TNG, and I'd love it; but for the way it handles files.

But it's not just Apple who have that sort of budget, I guess that's why microsoft are going to try. Of course, being microsoft, it'll probably be complicated and therefore rubbish.
I too like the idea of an all-video iPod, but the only thing is the lack of any tactile control with something like that. I like to have a fumble in my pockets as I walk down the street.

Elektex fabric is touch sensitive. Perhaps a wristband or lapel control is an option.Sput wrote:I too like the idea of an all-video iPod, but the only thing is the lack of any tactile control with something like that. I like to have a fumble in my pockets as I walk down the street.

I must admit, I would sooner take it out my pocket and look at it.

Interesting new stuff I saw at the IBC at the weekend included a PVR built into a pocket TV (Mobile digital TV), as well as supporting picture-in-picture. It's being hailed as "Tivo in your hand". At the moment it can store up to an hour of MPEG4 video on the built in 64MB of memory, but they are exploring hard disc capacity.
They (Texas Instruments) suggest that by 2010 we will have 100GB of storage in a 0.6" disc. In the short term they intend to produce an 8GB version which will store up to 40 hours.
The screen is too small to make it useful though. If it had the aesthetics of the Video iPod it would be very cool indeed.
