I'm not sure how the system works on the A166 heading out of York, but the cats'-eyes are actual lights, presumably LEDs, set in the road. It's only really noticeable if you switch your headlights off, and you can then see them twinkling away off into the distance.

Something tells me they could be solar-powered, as the light's similar to that given off by those solar-powered garden lights, which do work in the winter (although not quite so well). So it's possible such lights could be solar-powered all year round if they've got enough solar cells.

i've seen those, it's almost as though you're driving along a runway or something. shame more roads don't have them, especially some of the back roads and minor roads - some around here are pretty difficult to see where the edge of the road ends (and if you miscalculate you end up in a ditch)
