with a DTT pvr you don't have to pay for EPG data. and certainly with mine you can set it to automatically add x minutes as a safety buffer

I'm one of those people who don't always put the disc back in its sleeve - the same as I didn't put VHS tapes back in their boxes. While it doesn't particularly harm tapes, it seems to be death to discs.

Back in the early days of CD-ROMs, quite a few CD drive manufacturers decided to make drives that would only allow the use of discs inside protective caddies (the drive didn't have a tray, just a slot for the caddy).



Unfortunately, the idea never took off, for the usual reason (expense). However, the idea has been brought back for DVD-RAM discs (they're more delicate than other DVD formats?).



I have seen a Panasonic DVD-RAM recorder that has a special tray that allows the use of both caddies and 'naked' discs. It is a shame that most other manufacturers can't be bothered to produce this type of tray, as the caddies could be useful for providing extra protection for 'important' CDs/DVDs.

It really is outrageous that with the economies of scale they couldn't make a protected disc format for everyone. Even a thickly laquer coated disc surface would be better than what we have. Its a far cry from Judith spreading jam on a CD prototype on Tomorrow's World.

The Blu-ray format seems to be a disc in a protective sleeve, but I'll lay money on the fact that it will be DVDHD which will win the format war, simply because it can play standard DVD discs.

Wasn't it Keiran "Ballykissangel" Prendiville who did that? Though it does seem to have been a standard demonstration at the time, probably suggested by Philips.

But let's not get into whether it was Howard "Stableford" or "Stapleford". I lost a £20 bet nearly two decades ago, and I still haven't paid up.

In ye olden dayes on the radio we used to use those CD cart thingys. They worked nicely and kept everything scratch and fingerprint free. There were spare carts lying around so you could temporarily stick in some CDs of your own. One of those good ideas that never took off.
