The immigration debate

What's everybody's thoughts on this political hot potato?

Living in Newcastle/Gateshead, we have some of the lowest levels of non-British immigration in the UK. It is stiil unusual to see a brown, black or yellow face up here.

Other than when I studying in Sheffield, I never really encountered that many non-white people.

What type of difference does mass immigration into an area make?

Here where I live there is one area in particular which is home to a large number of Asian people, and I think what rubs people in other areas up the wrong way is that the people living in this area are given grants for their homes (which they own) to do them up, double glaze them etc. Now to be honest, these grants are probably available to anyone who applies for them, whatever colour their skin may be, but the link has been made that Asian people get loans for their homes, and that's what narks people.

I don't believe that people object to immigrants from wherever, I think it's preferencial treatment which appear to be based on this that people dislike. The same goes for positive discrimination with jobs, most decent people would rather that everything was done fairly, the right person for the job was employed, things like that.

The security at the channel tunnel is absolutely dire. It's got better, from what i see inowhere near as many immigrants on the A20 or M20 for ages. I know some immigration workers and there appears to be little to no security there.
The employees even get nervous travelling to Coquelles via the tunnel. It is an open ticket to the uk. The tunnel will be one of our biggest mistakes ever.. Thanks Maggie.

There is a decent-sized Haredi (Orthodox) Jewish community in Gateshead.

What Phil said about the Asians in his area is what I have heard quite a lot of here too. Phil is exactly right, though, when he says these grants are available for everyone, so why is it an issue?

Because you see so few different types around here, people do get hot under the collar sometimes about the number of immigrants/non-whites running newsagents, off-licenses, fish-and-chippies, etc.

I have never really why this is a problem. On the one hand, if they try to make a living for themselves, they're "stealing our jobs". On the other, if they are unemployed, they are "leeching from us". They can't win, it seems.

We have a fantastic mixed race round my parts but that said so many have infiltrated the system through the lack of security at the ports and tunnel.

I nearly ran some migrant over on a local b road and forgive me for being drunk and having strong feelings of patriotism but i wish i had run him and many other over fuckers over.

You should have tried living round here 5 or so years ago. Folkestone Road became the most alien and intimidating part of Dover. I grew up there. Shootings and stabbongs were rife.

JB, I implore you to drive down Ocean Road in Shields, and tell me then how many foreigners there are in the North East.

Interesting, miss h.

When I used to have chats with this sort of thing with my flatmates from different parts of the country when I was at uni, they said that I could never really understand the difference that mass immigration makes to a place because of where I grew up.

I like to think I am as open-minded and tolerant as the next person, but I wouldn't be sure how I would think if I was the only white guy in my street for example. I hope it wouldn't make any difference to me, but until I am in that situation, I can never know.

I know the street you're talking about, James. It is a little bit of a curry mile!

Lorna! Too much info dear!

Sorry, I thought we were in danger of turning this into an intelligent debate (heaven forbid!) so I had to resort to smut.

But yes, I'll second you Johnathanboy, and I think people do often try to come up with an excuse to dislike immigrants and people of differing nationalities, races or whatever to their own when really, it is down to their own ignorance and acceptance.

That's not to say that it's one-sided, however, and another thing which is a major issue (certainly around here) is the unwillingness of ethnic minorities to integrate. Again this works both ways, and to be honest it'd be a lot easier if everyone just accepted that at the end of the day, we are all members of different tribes, and different tribes rarely get on with each other.

Where I live they're everywhere. Most of the non-whites all get on a bus from Catford and board/alight at the same spot. My old crappy secondary school was full of them but it depends on the race. We have paki shops here too and there are chinks also running the local McDonalds.

But I would agree that there should be zero net immigration and we need to remove more of them. Thanks to them we now have pointless and/or illegal housing plots taking place in the grenery. I remember one time my college french teacher saying we need more immigrants in the country but sadly I didn't rebuttal even though it would lead to me cursing her.

But on the other hand we may need more of those multi-lingual "Please drive on the left" signs that Mrs H normally sees on the A20 near the tunnel if the immigration isn't reduced. I found it baffling that I saw one of those signs on the A2/A227 junction near Gravesend, anyone noticed that?

our area has had quite a problem in recent years, many of the immigrants are from eastern europe.

the fairstead area of kings lynn ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fairstead%2C_King%27s_Lynn )has a lot of social housing and is where a many of them end up.

it is sadly true that because many of the polish migrants are unable to speak cohesive english they are unable to work and as such are responsible for a lot of low-level crime in the area (thefts, shoplifting, unlicensed vechicles etc).

it's not *that* bad, but a glance down the court register is certainly interesting.
