Just before I take this to Media UK or somewhere like that, I thought I'd give you people a try.

Say I had some nice, crystal clear stereo 192kbps audio (such as this) and wanted to put an AM radio effect on it (so that it sounded like this) using, probably, Cool Edit 2000. How would I go about doing this? Are there any particular effects I should apply? Am I likely to get the realistic, atmospheric sound I'm looking for?

The way I'm thinking is to decrease the quality of the recording itself, then put some freshly-recorded AM radio static on top of it. This is perhaps a cheat's way, but I'm not sure whether: a) this would sound particularly convincing; or b) there is an easier way.

Any ideas here?

Assuming 2000 has roughly the same bits at Pro.

Have you tried something like Generate/Noise/Pink?

Would probably have to be pretty low level though.

Try...

Edit > Convert Sample Type

Choose 11025Hz as Sample Rate
For 'Channels', choose Mono and 50% Left, 50% Right
Choose 8 bit Resolution
Leave everything else as default.

This should give the audio that distinctive low bandwidth AM sound.

As Nick suggests, generating a bit of low-level noise, and mixing it with your audio should then finish off the effect.

You could also change the eq settings too, loose the top and bottom ends to give it the mid range AM feel.

Thank you chaps, that sounds rather good. I generated some pink noise at the lowest level and mixed it in at very low volume but it makes all the difference. When I have some time later, I'll mix in some silent AM recording so I can get that ringing sound, which I don't think can be generated from scratch really. I would upload how it sounds so far but it's having some problems saving at the moment.

Ta muchly.
