Should Scotland Break Free?
I love the Scottish, don't get me wrong. Every Scottish person I have ever met has been charming. I thought it important to state this before expressing my views on Scottish independence.
I am a proud Geordie - I love being a North East Englishman. There is an embryonic independence movement here, but it's nowhere near as strong as the Scottish feeling.
However, the North East could not survive without the rest of England. We'd crumble. There is nearly as much state intervention here as there was in a lot of the communist East.
The same is true of Scotland. There is little entrepreneurial drive there, like in the North East. Scotland, like my beloved home region, is heavily subsidised by the South East of England. Just like Wales, Northern Ireland, the South West and many "depressed", non-entrepreneurial regions in the UK.
Under the Barnett formula, the average Scottish person has 20-25% more spent on them by the Government than the average English person. Yet, the economy is still depressed and heavily reliant on government jobs and subsidy.
Scotland, like the North East of England, pretty much has, should drop the idea of independence because it would be the death of them.
London and the South East of England, were it a separate nation, would be richer than California, pro-rata. It would be one of the top 10 economic powerhouses in the world. If it weren't for them, we'd be screwed.
It really pisses me off that many of the Scottish think the English oppress them. It also pisses me off that many Geordies and Macams think we'd be better off alone. There is zero evidence to support that.
Time for a reality check for many of us, Scottish or otherwise.

There's a lot of jingoistic nonsense being spouted by Scots on TV Forum at the moment, particularly in the world cup threads; but the majority of Scottish people have no particular drive to be independant.johnnyboy wrote:It really pisses me off that many of the Scottish think the English oppress them. If we wanted to be independant, we would be. Make no mistake about that. With respect I don't think the notion is unfeasible. You only need look at the comparible economies around the world. Catalonia is a good example.
I'm not sure why it should "piss [anyone] off". There's probably a comparible quantity of people in the North East of England, Scotland and Wales who would like some kind of separation from the South East.
But its all rather moot, isn't it? This discussion was started by a Welshman, and has been responded to by English people.
Which Scot round here said they wanted to break away?
I also think Wales should break free. If Owain Glyndwr had had his way, today's Wales would have covered Cornwall, most of central England extending as far east as Northampton.
England would have been two small pockets. The south east and the area north of Liverpool to the Scottish border.
One of Wales' biggest advocates for Welsh independence? He reads the BBC News at Ten O' Clock. In a few decades when the world will be ruled by China and India and when America is a bankrupted nation (both financially and morally), then I think an awful lot will change in the west.
It will be our grandchildren who will be sitting in call centres in England answering calls from India. Scary thought, but it's coming!

I know it's technically incorrect, but I see Norterhn Ireland, Scotland, Wales and of course England as "states" much like the states in America. Unless things dramatically changed, as long as those people want to be united to Britain it makes logical sense, doesn't it?
err - if hitler had his way the UK would be united with the rest of europe under a fascist dictatorship. if osama had his way we would be living under an islamic caliphate. and your point is? if wales, (which as stated earlier, before the english exerted much influence over the border was never a unified territory for long) had of been influential then no doubt a unified england would have been less likely - but rather a continuation of the anglo saxon kingdoms such as mercia, essex etc with the welsh assuming control of one or many of them.Jamez wrote:I also think Wales should break free. but then this is fantasy and bares very little relation to the subject in hand
what on earth does huw edwards have to do with it? not to mention a sweeping "the end is nigh" statement about the collapse of western society?Jamez wrote:One of Wales' biggest advocates for Welsh independence? if you're going to start a discussion, then you could atleast try and stick to it.
for the record i know most welsh/scottish are perfectly normal people, neither for nor against the english. however i do find it ludicrous the way nationalists seem to think the vast majority of english dearly want to remain united. if the scottish wanted independence then i'd wish them luck, but they'd need to cut ties with the barnett formula too.
