Phone up and say your card is cracked and they'll post you "issue 1".

*Ta-da*

Edit: Oh shite.
It's the fifth card in a row which has been "Issue 0".

You're mad to pay less than £2 with a card, especially in a small chain/independent shop. Have you got any idea how much it costs to put these transactions through?!
Don't forget it'll cost shops money to put the cash in the bank too.... the joys of Business Bank Accounts - they charge you to put money in, they charge you to take it out!

Please re-read the second sentence of the second paragraph in my earlier message:
At about 22:15 last night, I wrote: Usually if I'm only buying only a few quids worth of stuff, I'll pay for it by cash . . .
It was one of those very rare occasions when I was a few pence short of the necessary amount of cash. And anyway, if a
shop accepts plastic, and I'm buying over £5 worth, I'll always use my debit card. I hate carrying too much loose change.

About 2 weeks later, I try another one in another location and in another town - and guess what - it worked. I got a chequebook within the week - the only snag being that they sent me 2 instead.
I had a problem with NatWest some considerable time ago, where they wouldn't stop sending me chequebooks. It got to the stage where they were arriving on an almost daily basis. In the end, I had to close the account to stop them.
