Is it true that if you buy a single from Woolworths, it now does not count in the Official UK Singles Chart?

A friend who works at Woolworths told me this, I'm not sure how true it is.

I don't know for sure, but I'd doubt they would sponsor hit40uk if their own sales didn't even affect the said chart.

I very much doubt it's true. Certainly it's been a common myth for a very very very very very very long time that Woolworths singles sales don't count toward the official chart. But nowt more than a myth. The "now" implies that something's changed recently, but frankly I can't see how either Woolworths or the Official Charts Company would benefit from changing the arrangement. So I think your friend is talking bollocks. If s/he works in Woolworths, this is only to be expected.

The way in which they are counted is different, however. AFAIK the "Hit 40" is based on both sales and airplay, whilst the Official Chart is just based solely upon sales.

I am slightly wary of charts that have airplay included in their figures, since commercial radio these days is all tightly playlisted and only a certain amount of songs are allowed onto the playlist by the "men in suits" and rotated every X hours therefore the chart could be rigged (in theory) if a certain song is repeated more frequently than others. I'm not saying they do this, however, but it really does make me go "hmmmm" when Westlife get yet another #1 slot.

The Pepsi Network Chart Show (or whatever it calls itself these days - I lost interest years ago) used to mix them up. So you'd have positions 40-11 being based on airplay (or it may have been sales and airplay) and then the official top 10. Compared to Radio 1 which did the official top 40. But it often meant you could find things on the Pepsi show that had long since dropped out of the Radio 1 chart.

Downloads are also included in both the Official Charts and hit40uk to my knowledge.

Oh fucking hell. Did I imagine that headline about who just got a number one?

I have a new theory: Woolies is NOT counted, and neither is ANYWHERE else. Instead, the passings of a Goat are placed on a map of Cornwall and automatically placed at #1 in the big Top 40 computer.

If that's wrong then I might just buy some Psience now and be done with it.

And, before you consider it, I wouldn't try Wiltshire, either!
