If I was driving along and had been listening to that radio show, I would have freaked out. I just have this thing about dying, and it really is my biggest fear.

Can anyone think of any other instances where people have died or seriously hurt themselves live on air?

(I know this is this kinda thread that should go on TVF, but I can't be bothered to read dozens of troll responses).

The Late Late Show springs to mind, and probably a few of the stunts on Noel's House Party caused injury.

When I worked in a hardware store many years ago, and old fellow had a heart attack and died in my arms as I caught him.

His wife was with him. She was blind. The whole occassion was most distressing, but was made slightly easier by a passing male nurse who took charge of the situation. I got a letter from the daughter of the old lady some weeks later thanking us for the way we looked after her and dealt with the situation.

It's not easy looking death in the eye, but it is a very solid fact of life, as it were.

Don't be fearful of it Jamez. Just live like you may not see tomorrow and you won't have many regrets.

True Gavin,

But for some reason, ever since I can remember I've always assumed I'm going to die young.

Even though I've never done drugs, I don't drink (once a month if that), and my both my parents families have no history of cancer or premature death, I still am absolutely terrified of it.

I go to sleep every night thinking "what if I die in my sleep? how long would I be lying here for anyone to notice?" :(

Yes, that sprung to mind first too. The Late Late Breakfast Show was the proper title.

I tend to think back to everything I've got. I wonder. Is that how I want to leave it? Do I want to leave having argued with my parents? Do I want to leave with so many pieces of life unresolved?

Do I want to leave everybody feeling shit at what I've done in the past?

Tommy Cooper instantly springs to mind.

I was only young at the time yet remember it vividly.

I see this thread getting rather morbid. Anyone want a Celine Dion C.d and Packet of razor blades?

If I were Sideshow Ed, I might ask if your biggest concern was death, or wondering if you would be missed ;)

Seriously though I did have an experience just like yours, and it wasn't nice. I do know exactly what you are saying.

At the time it was recommended that I call into play some of the clever relaxation techniques I learned in drama school, and they were very effective for me. Well, that and the scan I asked my doctor to run to prove my heart wasn't about to explode.. .

I was in a bad way. Let's never speak of it again.

I suppose its possible that at least one of us will pop off unexpectedly in our sleep, but whatchyagonnado?

On a similar note, and to introduce some levity to brighten things up, I always remember the Sunday evening phone-in on BRMB, MANY years ago, when the resident vicar was live on air, trying desperately to stop some punter ending it all by jumping off a railway bridge.

He finally talked the jumper into having a chat OFF air, so they went to a commercial break.

The BRMB jingle and straight into "Why not let the train take the strain?".

Oops!

I've recently developed a condition called Hyperventilation syndrome, and that is one BITCH of a thing to have!

It started one night in november when I got up from where I'm sitting now to make a coffee, and I felt so so faint and was gasping for air. I remember saying "oh my god" and then collapsed stone cold onto the floor.

I came round seconds later, convinced I was about to die. My heart was thumping, I was sweating, I couldnt breathe, I was in a hell of a state.

I was rushed to the university hospital by ambulance, hooked up to ECG's and other weird machinary and was told I had HVS.

A condition brought on by stress, and by where your breathing pattern has changed slightly over a period of time, thus gradually depleting the body of it's share of CO2, which it needs to feed the muscles and brain.

If your body becomes too low on CO2, it produces VERY nasty effects and symptoms which mimic serious illness such as a heart attack.

I still get attacks, usually around twice a week and they can occur anytime and anywhere. I havent had an attack as serious as the first ones, because I've learned to curb the worst of it by controlled breathing - but combined with mild flu (which i have now), overwork and stress its still a bitch to have.
